    "Terrible software."

    April 7, 2011  |   By whiskeyperm75

    Version: Paperless 1.3

    Pros

    Neat icon.

    Cons

Bare bones, missing so many utilities, crashes often and no way to properly organize by sub-categories with totals.

    Summary

I have iPad apps more powerful than this for a fraction of the cost. AVOID.

"Awesome application, best of it's kind."

    February 23, 2011  |   By donperreault

    Version: Paperless 1.3

    Pros

I love that Paperless has 1000's of merchants it can match up your receipts with and accepts numerous document types. Very stable application, I spent several hours adding, editing, deleting and scanning documents without one crash.

    Cons

I honestly haven't found any cons yet.

    Summary

I've been using iDocument for several months. It helped keep my documents in order but did not support many document types, it also crashed frequently when scanning. I have Cf and had a lung transplant on 12/12/09 and desperately needed something to keep my documents organized where I could find them easily without searching through drawers of medical bills, medical history and lastly my collection notices from the hospital.

Yesterday, I received an email from Mariner Software announcing the new version of Paperless 2.0. I never new Paperless existed, even though I am on their mailing list. I downloaded Paperless to give it a try. I was very surprised at how many document types it supported, as a matter of fact it accepted every document I threw at it. It even supports Safari webarchives, PDF and HTML from directly within Safari. For me this is very handy when viewing credit card statements and my online banking.

With Paperless 2.0 you can track any data with the ability to customize the fields. Hundreds of merchants are included to save time when adding receipts because Paperless is already set up for the included merchants.

I spent all afternoon transferring my documents from iDocument to Paperless 2.0, adding, deleting, editing and scanning. Not once did Paperless crash, document was crashing about every other scan. I am amazed at how it takes each document an analyzes the content using text recognition and fills in the fields with the amount due and the date due. You can scan a multi-page bill/document and combine it into one document.

For organizing you can add tags, categories and even sub-categories for easy finding. Paperless 2.0 also supports collections and smart folders that allow you to mix and match your criteria for easy finding of your documents.

After using iDocument I really am amazed at the detail and features found in Paperless 2. I did not use Paperless 1 but for me Paperless 2.0 is a no brainer. And for those using version 1.0, I think $25.00 is a steal for Paperless 2.0. I hate to criticize iDocument like I just have but for the same price Paperless 2.0 is so far ahead of iDocument that it would be foolish not to go with Paperless 2.0 and with a 30 day money back guarantee how can you go wrong?

I am giving it 5 stars right down the line because I can't find a single feature I need that it doesn't have and after iDocument crashing so much, it is a pleasure to work with an application that doesn't crash.

BTW: I am not affiliated with Mariner Software in any way. When I love an application I like to spread the word to other Mac enthusiasts like myself. Give iBank 4.0 a try, it is the best financial application for the Mac.

"Document storage app. Scan, store, organize and search."

    September 27, 2010  |   By r_vaessen

    Version: Paperless 1.3

    Pros

I like the 'Cover Flow' display, the QuickLook integration, and the organizational capabilities.

    Cons

I cannot get this application to quit without implicitly going to the app and selecting quit from the file menu. Tested numerous quit methods (over ten), and for some reason Paperless will only quit from file quit or CTRL-Q.

    Summary

Until they fix this issue (not quitting on log-out, restart, shutdown), I will not pay for any additional updates/upgrades. Troubleshooting efforts seem limited to case-by-case 'software conflict' basis, instead of coding a solution that leverages the 'quit' options that 'do' work. Marinersoftware thinks that this is a TWAIN/Scanner issue, but they're treating it like an individual user issue.

"Crashed right out of the gate"

    September 14, 2010  |   By k1d3q9n0

    Version: Paperless 1.3

    Pros

Paperless installed fine, right up to the software license agreement...

    Cons

Paperless *crashed* as soon as I agreed to the software license. I got the crash dump message the instant I clicked agree.

    Summary

I need reliable functioning OCR software (better than Adobe Acrobat 9). Paperless didn't fill that need for me!

"Bare Bones Scan and Organize Application"

    August 25, 2010  |   By Jeff Weber

    Version: Paperless 1.3

    Pros

Handy for scanning all your receipts and paper documents and putting them into a database for easy searching.

    Cons

Has some logistical issues with the user interface. Separate windows for receipts and for all other documents is too arbitrary and limiting. There is no way to edit smart collections once they have been created.

    Summary

Needs a redesigned user interface. Price is too steep for the minimal functionality provided.

"Works great (using v.1.2.1) - highly recommended"

    March 4, 2010  |   By fredfass

    Version: Paperless 1.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Versiontracker at the time of my post has version 1.2 listed, but there's been a subsequent update to 1.2.1. (changes not listed anywhere, though). Mariner bought this software from the developer but it continues to be updated. I use a Scansnap S300M scanner with my Mac Pro, running OS X 10.6.2, and all works fine. I really like the organizing features of Paperless, especially the "Smart Collections" feature which is real easy to set-up and use to filter your docs or receipts as you wish. Neat Receipts also has a "Smart" collections feature but it's lame in comparison.

Paperless is vastly better than the competition. To compare the 2 programs I had to buy Neat Receipts since they didn't offer a trial version (that's a red flag, folks). I tried it, didn't like it, asked for my money back, and the Neat Receipts never replied. They got my money and didn't care.

Getting into the habit of scanning your papers frees you from "paper-pile clutter" and eliminates the frustration of digging through real-world files to find something you really need. Just be sure to at least apply a category to everything you scan to get the full benefit of Paperless.

"Great software for keeping and tracking paperless bills"

    December 2, 2009  |   By pjdevitt

    Version: Paperless 1.1.1

    Pros

You simply download your paperless ebills or statements in PDF format and import them into this program.. It stores them for you as long as you need to keep them. You can organize documents in files by company and year.

    Cons

While you can encrypt the file it should be automatic. I store all my credit card and account statements and this includes account numbers etc.

    Summary

This is one of my essential pieces of software. I would not want to be wthout it.

    Version: Paperless 1.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I?m loving Paperless ? I often use my personal credit card and cash for work expenses and have never done a great job keeping track of it all. Now it is all there in one place and I can easily add the client names and project numbers required to get reimbursed from my company.

"too expensive, lack of editing features"

    May 30, 2009  |   By djjjk

    Version: Paperless 1.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The idea behind this software is good but its way too expensive for the casual user - at which it seems to be aimed. My main bugbear though, is the lack of an editing function or at least the ability to be able to call up the scans directly in Photoshop. I managed to get it working with my Epson Perfection 3200 but the scans were either clipped or not legible. The coverflow function is a nice touch but the scans are not sharp enough and too small to make any sense. I managed to scan directly - much better control - in Photoshop and resave the better pdfs to the Receipt Library but the program doesn't seem to recognise them, even after quitting and restarting.

I was also able to write much smaller pdf files in Photoshop, the Paperless files were way too big and not as good.

I highlighted these concerns, in reply to the developers enquiry concerning my purchase (nice touch by the way) but haven't heard back? so what's the point of that really?

I also use Mariner's MacJournal which I really like so this was a big disappointment. With Paperless, all I'm left with is a nice way to sort/arrange information that I've added by hand anyway - which kind of defeats the purpose of this - and a bunch of useless scans. It would be nice to see this "beta-esque" software working as promised but for the moment my recommendation is to wait till they update it and/or drop the price? if that ever happens!
