I am giving this software five stars despite the not always intuitive panels and other small issues. This is because it does certain editing tasks very well for large multi-page PDFs. Some of these features can be found in free software to do one page at a time, but this is the only software I've found which does this for all pages of large PDFs. (And works fine in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.) See some of the features under Summary below.
see description under Summary below.
Not free - but you can find it for a low price
Convert gray PDF to black and white (all pages) - even removes "stains"
Convert color PDF to black and white (all pages)
Erase whatever you choose (current page)
Despeckle (all pages - not completely successful, but helps)
Autostraighten (all pages)
Rotate current page
Resize (all pages)
Remove black scanning borders (all pages)
Compress (automatic whenever a copy of the PDF is created for editing)
The user guide is excellent in listing all the features, but does not always make clear how you get there. A quick google search will find the answer.
Before buying, download the basic version's user guide (Getting Started Guide) - the basic probably has everything needed. And shop for a good price.
Register your copy right away. Otherwise after five edits, you have to install it again.
Create a working folder just for Paperport, and move a few items there temporarily. (Not necessary but makes it easier to "see" what is done and what still needs doing.
Click on the item to be edited, and then click on "Open with Image View".
When prompted, check "make a copy" - that way your original PDF remains intact. Plus, the new copy will be compressed without affecting quality.
Fyi, I use "Convert Color" to change the PDF to black and white, and I change the resolution to 300 at the same time. There is another way to do it, using a "white point" and "black point" to indicate what needs to be whiter/blacker overall.

Version: PaperPort 14.0
Good scanner control and PDF file conversion features
Cumbersome/difficult GUI presentation. Not intuitive when trying to organize and work with documents and graphics.
We have Version 12 which came bundled Free with a Corel application. I would not buy Paperport as it has only limited usefulness and is too complicated/cumbersome to use. however, its scanner control feature and PDF file feature work quite well especially when your word processing and other applications do not include these features. It integrates very well with Firefox add-on "Capture & Print" to convert a "screen print" to a PDF format file.
