I agree with sdbick that the updated Photomerge in Photoshop CS3 raised the bar. PTGui is good but CS3 wins hands down. Photomerge in CS3 is fast, easy, accurate and has 'smart' blending built in.
PTGui gets more expensive with each release and now the folks at PTGui have us on the $$$ upgrade treadmill much like Realviz did.
I'm not against PTGui. It *is* very good but I no longer have a need for it. The only benefits I can see for using PTGui is the manual control it offers (but I never had a stitch fail in CS3 anyway) and fisheye lens support (I don't use fisheye lenses).
As for giga pixel panoramas, it would be interesting to see what happens when the gigapan project finally releases their combo head and software for what appears to be less than what PTGui costs alone!! -

I've been a panoramic stitcher for about 5 years, and have never been entirely pleased with the offerings for the mac. I used to use Apple QTVR Studio on OS 9 and then in Classic mode when I switched to OS X. Does a good job, but Classic is a pain.
I tried all the offerings from Kekus (PTMac which I never got to work) RealViz Stitcher, Hugin, VR Worx, Canon's PhotoStitch, and others. Some were good, but each had shortcomings. Most of the more powerful tools are simply front-ends for Helmut Dersch's outstanding (and difficult to use) PanoTools.
PTGui is great. I was utterly impressed with the software and promptly purchased a license. Been a happy user for the last 6 months.
Then I got Photoshop CS3. Adobe REALLY fixed up their PhotoMerge tool with this release. Big time. They seem to have incorporated "SmartBlend" which hasn't been available for any of the mac stitching software. Hands down, CS3 is the best stitching software available for the mac.
But, if you don't plan on getting CS3, PTGui is a very solid product and will produce excellent results. Version 6.0.3 is solid. I haven't used This beta version, and most likely won't upgrage (unless it's free) as I'm so happy with CS3.
I think PTGui is a little over-priced, but I'd still recommend it to anyone who has serious stitching needs. Great tool. -

Windows users have been spoilt for choice when it comes to Panoramic viewers and stitching programs, so I was thrilled when I heard of this program. I wasn' dissappointed. PTGui is an intuitive, easy to use program. I am new to stitching images but the results are better than I expected. As I get to know the program I can create better panoramics. The program can be highly automated or manual. Nice web site and tutorials. Excellent well worth £49.95. -

I needed a quick and reliable way to stitch 3-4 image architectural panoramas (rectangular projection) for work and briefly evaluated Hugin, Calico, PTMac, as well as PTGui. PTGui was the only app that produced good quality panoramas with my source images, without much (any) fooling with control points, horizontal lines, or lens settings. The "Project Assistant" (wizard) did better than any of my manual attempts. Although the user interface uses (mostly) Aqua widgets, it's a far cry from being truely "Mac-like", although it's not hard to use, just visually awkward. Still, the best for what I need it to do.
