PDF2HTML

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET Staff on February 27, 2009

This conversion application pays attention to the details yet its limited trial options didn't give us a good sense of its true talents. PDF2HTML generates quality documents at a speed that is more than adequate. It both retains complex formatting, and creates simple and attractive navigation menus to manage documents. What impressed us the most is how the program converts documents from PDF to HTML. Instead of just pushing a whole PDF document into JPEG format, it extracts text and converts to HTML, while creating JPEGs from images. This attention to detail makes it much easier to create searchable documents. If needed, you can reduce the overall document size by downgrading the JPEG quality. We were disappointed that the trial version only allows the conversion of five PDF pages, however. Overall, this application may be a useful tool for people looking to convert documents in a more flexible format.

"Results are almost, but not quite, accurate"

    November 17, 2006  |   By Zeffig232

    Version: PDF2HTML 1.6

    Pros

Out of all of the programs that convert PDF to HTML, this was my second favorite next to Intelligent Converter's nearly identically named product. This program and IC's program both produce similar results, that is, a folder containing an Index file and all associated files. This program's installation was smooth. User interface is pleasant. Results, even when I converted a complex PDF with text running in all different directions and with different fonts and justifications, was nearly flawless. The only flaw was in the last column (21st column out of 21!), where a few lines were overlapping. Otherwise, centered text remained centered, vertical remained vertical, separator bars separated what they were supposed to, even the custom header looked exactly like it did in the original PDF. Clearly, there are skilled programmers involved here. Uninstallation was clean and hassle-free.

    Cons

Tiny vertical text, although accurate in positioning, is difficult to read when zoomed, and almost looks like a pixelated JPEG with some smearing. Some text occasionally overlaps. More overlaps are visible when you zoom to 200%. When you try to zoom HTML, you see message "To help protect your security...", and you have to "Allow blocked content." This might not be something wrong with the program, but instead with Windows; I'm not sure. All of these are minor complaints.

    "it doesnot convert links"

    September 28, 2003  |

    Version: PDF2HTML 1.6

    Summary

The trial version lets you convert 100 files and only converts the first 5 pages of each. A limited test revealed it has some problems with tab-alignment. The conversion looks fairly decent otherwise. They let you choose between page by page conversion or to convert the whole document into one page. If you choose for the page by page conversion, you get a acrobat reader look-alike user interface for navigating from page to page, including the ability to zoom. This looks nice. I decided against using it when I noticed that navigation links in the pdf-file are not preserved in the generated html-file
