PDF Reader for Windows 7 is a fast, lightweight freeware reader that can display and print PDFs as well as convert them into a wide range of other formats. It's designed to integrate with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 as the default PDF viewer, but it's also backward-compatible with Vista, XP, Windows 2000, and some server releases. It doesn't create PDFs; for that job, you'll still need a full-featured PDF software program, such as the one the developer also offers as a paid upgrade. We tried the freeware PDF Reader for Windows 7 in Windows 7 Home Premium SP1.

PDF Reader's colorful layout is simple but attractive, with a nicely rendered toolbar that basically replicates the most essential commands from the Menu bar. We could choose to hide or display the Menu bar, Tool bar, and Status bar by clicking the Options menu and checking or unchecking the appropriate boxes. The Tools menu is notable for a slideshow feature as well as an option to set the program as your system's default PDF reader. We pressed Help, and the program opened a Web site offering e-mail support as well as a tutorial and PDF manual for the aforementioned premium software. However, most users will find PDF Reader easy to figure out: open your PDF, adjust the view by zooming and rotating, and either print the document or save it in a different format.

We started by opening some PDF files we keep for just such a purpose. PDF Reader opens files quickly, even large, multipage files. Files were rendered nicely, including color images, and the image and page navigation commands worked well. To convert PDFs, we simply saved files in our choice of a variety of formats: TXT, BMP, JPG, GIF, PNG, WMF, EMF, and EPS. We could also print PDFs and view document property sheets. While that's about the limit of what PDF Reader for Windows 7 does, that's what most users need in a free PDF reader, and is similar to the capabilities of other tools of its type. We did notice that it seemed faster than certain big-box freeware, though.

"CNet Download utility contains the SweetPacks virus"

November 15, 2013  |  By garnertony4479

 |  Version: PDF Reader for Windows 7 1.0

Pros

No pros for this

Cons

Thought I would get JUST a pdf reader. Never thought I would have to watch out for viruses on this site. The CNet downloader contains the Sweetpacks virus. DO NOT USE THE DOWNLOADER TO GET THIS FILE.

"QUICK LITE & EASY 1-Click Instant View CONVENIENCE"

October 08, 2013  |  By incomechanix

 |  Version: PDF Reader for Windows 7 1.0

Pros

Ease of Install/Setup
Practical for 1 Click instant viewing
Cost: Free

Cons

does not have PDF -to- DOC conversion capability

Summary

90% of my dealing with .pdf files is that I simply want to click on it and look at it. Period. I right click the file, click properties, use the browse option, locate this program and associate this software to open pdf files, and VOILA, it's a snap after that. It is FAST. The doc I tested it on was a full page sized photocopied image saved in a pdf format and you know that image files are much larger and more complex files. It opened lightning quick, like it was a text file. And that's what I want. If that's what you want, you got it here..

"Simple, fast, and safe program"

March 11, 2013  |  By afpdriver

 |  Version: PDF Reader for Windows 7 1.0

Pros

Our company deployed this reader for all laptops and workstations, and it is a simple and fast program much better than Adobe Reader XI if you don't expect tons of features from a PDF reader. One nice feature is the 'save as text' option. We've analyzed the installer with VirusTotal dot com website and found the file is CLEAN as proved by 44 antivirus products.

Cons

Decent reader. DO NOT USE CNET'S INSTALLER. Go to the publisher's website, and download the genuine installer.

Summary

Very simple and fast program, if you need that I think that is right stuff.

"Filled with spyware."

February 09, 2013  |  By jeffneumanlee

 |  Version: PDF Reader for Windows 7 1.0

Pros

I am sure it may be a fine product, but as of today (and yesterday) 02/09/2013 to down load means spending time getting rid of the spyware and programs that take over your browser.

Cons

So, CNET, I thought you were clean! This is the first time I've downloaded a program with junk in it from you.

Summary

CNET, please take this review down when you have cleaned up this program.

"Slim reader for my old Windows 7 laptop"

December 09, 2012  |  By MaryOnCloud

 |  Version: PDF Reader for Windows 7 1.0

Pros

I have an old laptop with Windows 7 loaded as the second optional operating system. This PDF reader does allow me to open, view, and print my PDF files at hand. Fast, reliable, and freebie second to none.

Cons

It seems that it does not support mouse scrolling between PDF pages when a PDF file is encrypted.

Summary

Great freeware, slim, fast, reliable, and second to none.

"More than a PDF reader"

November 15, 2012  |  By Larry Hans

 |  Version: PDF Reader for Windows 7 1.0

Pros

Download this app from CNET, and it works as expected. One interesting finding is that I can convert my PDF document to plain text and/or JPEG image page by page.

Cons

I can set this app as my default PDF viewer on Windows 7 without any issue simply from the menu Options->Set as default PDF Reader. However, the installer does not automatically set this app as the default PDF reader.

Summary

If you don't feel like the bulky Adobe Reader X or Adobe Reader XI, this app is a good alternative.

"Complicated installation."

September 24, 2012  |  By traumig

 |  Version: PDF Reader for Windows 7 1.0

Pros

Promises are good.

Cons

When installed in TechTracker's "smart install" mode, it cannot open PDF files. But installation by "classic" method through running installer was unsuccessful.

March 24, 2012  |  By ipdsprinter

 |  Version: PDF Reader for Windows 7 1.0

Pros

Fast, no ad banner! I can view my spreadsheet in PDF format at screen width, or screen height. It's up to my choice.

Cons

Well, this free PDF Reader does not allow me to fill in tax form in PDF, such as W-9 form.

Summary

Like it, and thumb up!
