Version: Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition) 2.1

"Good dictionary entries, poor user interface"

    on November 8, 2004

Summary: I've been experimenting with my new pop-up dictionary (ODE) and have concluded that the user interface (iFinger) is not as good as it could be. Main irritation is not being able to browse. It won't accept mis-spelled words either. My old (1995) Pocket Oxford Dictionary (POD) did both. (In POD, if you entered a mis-spelled word, it would show the first word (in alphabetical order) that had the same letters as the search word up to the letter in error. This feature was helpful if you didn't know the correct spelling of the word you were trying to look up... sort of like a real dictionary!)
I will leave ODE/iFinger installed on my PC because it's much better than nothing at all, and I can use MS Word's spell checker to find words I can't spell (or just use trial-and-error).
On the positive side, ODE seems to have thorough definitions and derivations, and it finds words from derivatives (e.g. you can enter "comprising" and it will find "comprise" and give you a long spiel on correct and incorrect usage, etc).
The version I have (V2.08) failed to recognise all-uppercase entries, and American variants, e.g. "dialog", but the entry for "dialogue" includes the variant "dialog". iFinger needs some work!
