"Using BCM database tool"
Version: Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager: Database Admin Tool 1
Pros
We are very happy with BCM database tool. Works smoothly and allows the data to reside on our server for both access and backup purposes.
Cons
When making the database our server gave a few options for the type of database to use. It seemed obvous to use the one called MSSMLBIZ but was still confusing or potential error.
Summary
We have really liked using BCM having started with 2003 and then 2007 and now using 2010. Had a few bumps along the way but are really enjoying the simplicity of the tools. We training our staff on how to use it comfortably in less the 3 hours. We are running five users concurrently and have lots of data and action including a remote laptops and it is working well for us.
Configuration is straight forward though you must use the actual username and password that each user uses to log-on to ther workstation.
Don't use some old abandoned box for this either as it will run a SQL database that requires a little horsepower for decent performance. If you run this on an old machine you will be unhappy. -
"AWFUL SYSTEM AND A WASTE OF $$$"
Version: Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager: Database Admin Tool 1
Pros
The idea of a contact system that does everything from mail merge to reports and offers a variety of data searches sounds great.
Cons
Too complicated, impossible to import data from Excel spreadsheet w/o redoing the entire program. For anyone with clients on the East Coast, database cant accept zip codes beginning with zero, almost impossible to find a tech who can explain how.
Summary
Too difficult to use despite purchasing a separate book how to use the system, and the help section of the system offers a list of 100 topics to search through to answer a question, not specific to the question. It may be okay for creating a brand new database but it is not usable for transfering an existing database.
