"Why all he complaints?"

August 21, 2008  |  By rhpatrick

 |  Version: Opera 9.5.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have previously reviewed this software. I am reviewing it again based on overall performance, security, and stability.not preference.
First like Firefox, and Camino, this bowser is "rock solid secure" does not crash, and hs built in "handicapped features" not found in the "big guys" Deleting "old preferences" will cure your fears. Second, it has a built in mail client, and alerts are given me,when I receive a message or a blocked pop up. This holds true for sent messages as well.
This is the only browser with a "bit torrent client; what about the big guys?
Also it is not a memory hog; I have ussd this browser in my classic time, and spent $40 dollars; it is now free.
Those of you complaining about it's looks, download a skin to make it look like the browser of your choice, Netscape, IE, Camino, Safari; look for yourself don't post something which I have found correct. Yes all reviews seem to be based on prefeence; would it not be wise to be objective?
Lastly, rather than store the paasswords in the keychain, it has a Wand Manager for passwords. I cant find an issue with a browser remembering passwords in it's own database for security purposes.
Please change the user agent for sites I am reading that Opra will not display; it has no problem in recognizing a bank site I vist, but Safari does have a peoblem.

"Much improved"

Summary

While still a little quirky - it is a beta - this is a much improved version over 9.2x. The Kestrel engine is far superior to past versions. This is looking awesome.

"What's not to like?"

September 23, 2006  |  By activadesign

 |  Version: Opera 9.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I switched from Mozilla (SeaMonkey) to Opera about a month ago, and I really love it. The feature set is a bit different, but there are a few phenomenal ones, like mouse gestures, custom search strings, ability to lock/slide tabs, etc. Biggest problem is lack of html editing capabilities, either in emails or of pages.

If you're looking for a ton of features in a fast, stable, free browser give it a try. Not perfect, but very fast on my MacBook.

"Opera have done it"

August 06, 2006  |  By macsteiro

 |  Version: Opera 9.01

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It was long time ago i tryed Opera browser on my mac. That time it crashes all the time. Now i have installed 9.01. What a differense. It is a very good browser, i will say the best browser on my mac today. It have simular feature as Omniweb, when you have your cursor on the tab it show a miniature picture of the page + text, cool. It have good widgets you can download. Now i use Opera widgets and not the widgets on my Mac.
Opera has a good e-mail client, cool notes feature+++ and as i know the most secure browser you can use. Its fast, i have all the browsers installed on my mac and Opera is the fastest beside Omniweb who is "lightning".
It is a few pages i can use on Opera, but Omniweb does the job, so know i use 2 browsers, Opera as my primary browser and Omniweb.
Thanks to Opera, they have made a very good browser!

"Worse than Mozillas"

June 21, 2006  |  By macnerd10

 |  Version: Opera 9.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The browser is not easy to configure. Does not have the Go button, which is a hassle, because the back button does not work all the time and there is no automatic way to go back - you need to input the previouis URL. The wand is not practical for passwords. When you have one password for the site with several login options (like review materials), other browsers just input the login and password and wait for you to hit OK or other button. Wand automatically launches the site and it goes to the first (wrong in my case) option. I could not see a spinning ball showing activity. When loading, Opera does not seem to visibly function and then the page appears. Toolbar customization is a nightmare. The main bar bnuttons cannot be changed one by one (nice feature in Netscape and the likes) if you put an icon there by mistake - you can only reset it completely. Personal toolbar also does not allow for removing buttons - I just chose not to show it and put everything on the main bar. Besides, it has some buil-in search windows that are useless but cannot be removed - they just take up space on the bar. Page loading is usually significantly slower than in Mozilla browsers. All these features do not make Opera 9.0 a finished product. The upshots: it does not crash like Safari and seems to be stable; certain high security pages allow access on an Intel Mac where Mozilla browsers fail but Safari works (e.g., Microsoft Web Outlook access e-mailer).

"Improved and yet useless..."

June 21, 2006  |  By :: MILE ::

 |  Version: Opera 9.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
...at least for me, that is! It still doesn't support WYSIWYG editing on many blog systems that I use, only offers me like 1/3 of the options available...!? It doesn't work with the new Yahoo! Mail and even though that's probably a glitch on Yahoo!'s side, it's a problem for me...! Itstill doesn't autocomplete URLs, still shows some weird behaviour with some websites...and so on...

I just want a good reliable fast working web browser -- not a universal net app that's trying to implement BitTorrent and Mail and RSS and...Widgets...!?! Well, and from my point of view it's not really that much faster than the other browsers anyway...

So Safari still is my favourite and as much as I'd like to use it primarily, I'm stuck with that stupid FireFox for the sakes of some compatibility issues...! And Opera is no alternative either, not even with this new 9.0 release...

"Slow GUI, non-Apple look and feel"

June 20, 2006  |  By Central Scrutinizer--2008

 |  Version: Opera 9.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Using Opera on my Mac makes me feel like I'm using Windows. It's ugly. The GUI is dog-slow. Yes, there are many cool features, but at the cost of a slow application. Opera may render pages the fastest, but it's GUI really taxes older G4 systems.

I prefer Safari or Camino: both are svelt apps that integrate seamlessly with OS X's look and feel, and both are very fast at rendering. I guess I just don't miss those few milliseconds Opera saves on rendering html.

Amazingly fast and rock-solid stable. Opera has come a long way in addressing the needs of the Mac community and this release of their browser proves it. Renders very well! Nice work Opera!
