"Best browser out there"

April 23, 2005  |  By Tezkah

 |  Version: Opera 8.00

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've used every browser out there on Mac and Linux and Windows, and this is the best one out there. It manages to not only be faster than Firefox, but also lighter while still retaining the mail and chat features that Mozilla had ot take out to make their program less of a monster.

Firefox also needs many, many extensions to make things work to my liking. Opera on the other hand comes with everything ready, such as mouse gestures, URL Filtering, IRC, etc. It is also much nicer on my memory than Firefox (Try leaving Firefox running overnight, you'll find its using all your memory.)

For those who complain that it is "thrashing their hard drives" (whatever that means), they're simply mistaken. Unless you have less than 192mb of RAM, you won't notice any harddrive activity. You could complain that it uses up more RAM when running, but this is only so it can instantaneously go back and forward. Try clicking the back arrow, or using a mouse gesture. On Firefox and IE, it goes to the harddrive, and is delayed. On Opera it keeps the cache in the RAM, and you get instantaneous movement. When you minimize Opera, the RAM is released. I mean, what else would you be using the RAM for when web browsing?

M2, the mail component is also awesome. It alerts me to new emails by showing an icon in the taskbar, and is only two clicks away when I'm browsing. I'll be using Opera for many years to come.

The price is expensive since web browsers are usually free, but you get what you pay for. Simply the best browser out there, and you can always get a student discount if you go to school.

"Not so hot"

November 04, 2004  |  By manders

 |  Version: Opera 7.60 Preview 2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Configurable, yes, but plain confusing right out of the box. It's window-handling system is incomprehensible. It also makes my hard disk thrash like a dying whale when opening or closing the app, compared to minimal HD activity from IE or Firefox (the latter of which has an immediately intuitive 'tabbed' window feature that knocks the pants off Opera's version).

Its handling of HTML is perverse compared to IE and Firefox, particularly with Yahoo's pages

On the plus side it disables 'no-right-click' scripts, has a good pop-up blocker (but not as good as Firefox's), and admittedly is a very small download, though, as i say, it makes the hard disk thrash nearly as much as netscape, and doesn't feel at all lightweight.

I'm sorry, but with Firefox - a better browser- being free, you'd have to be very devoted to the software-makers to stay loyal to this app.

"Falling behind on the web; rising star in mail"

February 07, 2004

 |  Version: Opera 7.23

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Opera 7.23 is a visually appealing browser that helped blaze the trail multi-page internet access. The option to use multiple pages in a single window speeds browsing. Otherwise, claims to improve sheer rendering speed are necessarily bogus. Despite the price, Opera has fallen behind in competition from the Internet Explorer engine, on which, most notably, a _free_ product called MyIE2 has elaborated the multi-page design more fully, consistently, and usably. Opera continues to innovate, however, and version 7.23 contains a semi-integrated email program (M2) that abandons folders for multiple views of the same material, so that the same item can have multiple instances. Opera is available in a free version with prominent advertising. Since its aesthetics are a large part of what recommends it, you may not be satisfied.

You would think with backing from Adobe that this browser would support CSS better....I have found that if you reload pages SOMETIMES they load correctly...Come on Opera Give us something to work with and you might see more users from Win-doze and OS X.

"Poor CSS support -- Firebird is better"

October 27, 2003  |  By Strider72

 |  Version: Opera 7.21

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
A nicely thought out program, but the poor CSS support is harder to ignore as more sites are rewritten using Web Standards. The speed and features are nice, but useless if it doesn't display the page properly.

I use Firebird on Windows, Safari on Mac. Not perfect, but d***ed good.
