Opera

CNET Editors' review

Opera's move to Webkit and later embracing the Chromium engine signals a new, much more competitive push by the Scandinavian browser-maker to keep up with speedier demands, yet still maintaining some of the classic signature features of previous versions.

When you open the browser, you'll find a new Discover tab sitting on the welcome page. Opera will curate various news articles around the world. The left drop-down will list various topics and categories tailored around your interests. The right drop-down menu lets you discover content from around the world in various languages. The Discover feature may sound a bit like fancy branding at first for a news aggregator, but it's well executed and appropriate to Opera's mission of being more than just a Web browser.

Off-Road mode also makes its way into the desktop browser, which strips extraneous content from Web pages to give you just the bare-bone parts of a site, while reducing data and memory consumption.

Speed Dial and Stash are both very fluid, well-executed takes on bookmarking. Using Speed Dial is similar to organizing apps on a touchscreen, so it's no coincidence that Opera has designed this browser to be touch friendly with large containers. You can reorder and reorganize your saved pages or drag them into another to create a folder.

Stash is another take on saving pages and reading them later, but functions more like Pocket in that it's meant for pages to be read later. Again, these are features that can be achieved via extensions and Web apps, but having them conveniently built into the browser and working natively brings its own advantages. And this makes sense: earlier in the year, Opera released its mobile version to complement the desktop browser and maintain a consistent user experience much more seamlessly across devices than it has ever really done before.

Opera has maintained a consistent but small fraction of the browser market, with a noteworthy hold on the mobile market with Opera Mini on lower-end devices. Version 15 reflects a refocused initiative on performance, design, and surprisingly, content curation. It's still a long uphill battle when facing heavyweight titans like IE, Firefox, and Chrome, but if users are looking to embrace an alternative take without sacrificing performance, then we highly recommend taking Opera out for a spin.

    "Was good. No more."

    January 2, 2014  |   By Streeeeetch

    Version: Opera 18.0.1284.68

    Pros

None compared to other browsers - it's just a stripped down Chrome now. You're better off just using Chrome.

    Cons

    No Bookmarks
    No Bookmarks
    No Bookmarks

    Summary

I was along term fan of Opera - used it for many years with a couple of visits to Firefox when Opera became slow or unstable over the years but always went back because in its default config it was near perfect for my needs. I use bookmarks as my virtual library. Opera's bookmark handling was excellent.
It was, however, always a bit flaky with some sites. I travel a lot and kept Chrome for booking planes. No time to mess about booking one with 2 hours before a flight goes!
Now they've tried to become trendy and just become one of the crowd instead of the one who stood out as something special.
    Dull, bad, sad.
I have Firefox now with a few extensions to make it more (old...) "Opera like" and don't need Chrome any more. RIP (old) Opera.

    Updated on Jan 3, 2014

Cnet Guys: Given the Opera up to v12 was "outstanding" and really did warrant 4 stars and the versions since that might be called "Opera" but are totally different, would it be fairer to have split the review and results into two separate items as I think the current user reviews vastly disagree with the averages and skew the perception unfairly.

    "Going back to Firefox"

    December 29, 2013  |   By zeitfliesst

    Version: Opera 18.0.1284.68

    Pros

Speed might be improved from v.12

    Cons

As mentioned before, no bookmarks, and many features from v.12 is now gone.

    Summary

Since v.18 is missing many features that I was used to from previous versions, I have been holding up with version 12.16, but I decided that I can't keep using a browser that's no longer going to be updated or maintained, since it's going to be vulnerable to security threats. Besides, it has been crashing and slowing to a crawl recently for some reason. I am now going back to Firefox for now until Opera makes substantial improvements to its current development.

    "handicapped a great thing"

    December 25, 2013  |   By ChoiceVoice

    Version: Opera 18.0.1284.68

    Pros

    -fast
    -stash feature is ok
-still has fast loading panels or start up boxes or fast dials or whatever they're called
-used to be leaders in antiphishing, and suppose they still are (they had acquired an antiphishing company a while back that was the best).
    -chrome like without the spying.
-great developers that will continue to work on this product.

    Cons

-has acquired many of chromes disadvantages (a dozen running processes etc, but not all - ex. not messing with my startup) but also lacks some of chromes selling points (many of the apps, sandboxing).
    -lost integrated mail
-bookmarks missing (which is not explained and frustrating cuz i searched for them for ever) - apparently stash is a similar new way for this? and there are some crude apps for this that i don't like yet.

    Summary

poo compared to what it was:(

    but ok to use.

    Updated on Dec 25, 2013

further note: on my linux, the new opera is very nice on my resources and doesn't seem to suffer the same memory freeze ups that chrome and firefox do.

    "Was Great, now ruined!"

    December 18, 2013  |   By johnbok

    Version: Opera 18.0.1284.68

    Pros

    None for old users

    Cons

No control as before, veiw options gone, bookmarks gone. Why oh why did they break a great browser and come up with this rubbish?

    Summary

I have been an Opera user for many years, but I will not be using this version, ever. I tried it twice now, the second with more patience. All that gave Opera an edge over other browsers has gone and we have a minimilist idea that just doesnt cut it. When is the funeral for this once brilliant software?
