Opera

CNET Editors' review

Opera's move to Webkit and later embracing the Chromium engine signals a new, much more competitive push by the Scandinavian browser-maker to keep up with speedier demands, yet still maintaining some of the classic signature features of previous versions.

When you open the browser, you'll find a new Discover tab sitting on the welcome page. Opera will curate various news articles around the world. The left drop-down will list various topics and categories tailored around your interests. The right drop-down menu lets you discover content from around the world in various languages. The Discover feature may sound a bit like fancy branding at first for a news aggregator, but it's well executed and appropriate to Opera's mission of being more than just a Web browser.

Off-Road mode also makes its way into the desktop browser, which strips extraneous content from Web pages to give you just the bare-bone parts of a site, while reducing data and memory consumption.

Speed Dial and Stash are both very fluid, well-executed takes on bookmarking. Using Speed Dial is similar to organizing apps on a touchscreen, so it's no coincidence that Opera has designed this browser to be touch friendly with large containers. You can reorder and reorganize your saved pages or drag them into another to create a folder.

Stash is another take on saving pages and reading them later, but functions more like Pocket in that it's meant for pages to be read later. Again, these are features that can be achieved via extensions and Web apps, but having them conveniently built into the browser and working natively brings its own advantages. And this makes sense: earlier in the year, Opera released its mobile version to complement the desktop browser and maintain a consistent user experience much more seamlessly across devices than it has ever really done before.

Opera has maintained a consistent but small fraction of the browser market, with a noteworthy hold on the mobile market with Opera Mini on lower-end devices. Version 15 reflects a refocused initiative on performance, design, and surprisingly, content curation. It's still a long uphill battle when facing heavyweight titans like IE, Firefox, and Chrome, but if users are looking to embrace an alternative take without sacrificing performance, then we highly recommend taking Opera out for a spin.

    July 20, 2013  |   By pierce200

    Version: Opera 15.0.1147.130

    Pros

    Customization, flow, aesthetics.
    Unique.

    Cons

Takes some time to get a handle on it, those without patience might not ever see how useful it really is.

    Summary

I thought nothing could bump me away from Chrome, but I'm using 15.0 more all the time.

    "It's an OK browser"

    July 14, 2013  |   By Cyrus565

    Version: Opera 15.0.1147.130

    Pros

Has only a few of the privacy addons offered by Firefox

    Cons

Not enough privacy addons, no option for print edit or other add on tools offered by Firefox

    Summary

It's OK if you don't mind some privacy violations, personally, I prefer not to be tracked and targeted with all kinds of advertisements based on my web browsing habits. Good browser, but needs a lot of improvement to compete with Firefox.

"In it's current state it's cheap imitation of Chrome"

    July 14, 2013  |   By Matthaion

    Version: Opera 15.0.1147.130

    Pros

It's fast and all the compatibility issues that some websites had with previous versions of Opera are gone.

    Cons

No proper bookmark function. Customization options are mostly gone. Opera notes is gone. No possibility to block websites through browser without addons. It crashes lot more often than 12.xx series.

    Summary

This feels more like Alpha version product than Final product. At it's current state (most features lacking, some features that are in not working properly) this should had never been marketed as the main version of Opera. They should had kept it Beta at least for 5 months more and actually added back the most important features. They wanted to show the future of Opera? Amputated Opera lite is the future? I hope that they will eventually add back most of the features but this release was PR disaster. It will scare off many Opera users and some will never come back. I went back to 12-series and I'm gonna stick to it until the new Opera actually gets usable and if it doesn't I'm gonna stop using Opera altogether when 12-series gets too outdated. I kept using Opera since 2001 because of the superior features and customization options regardless of the website compatibility issues it was often plagued with.

"I will stick with Opera 12.15 for now"

    July 12, 2013  |   By musicman4you

    Version: Opera 15.0.1147.130

    Pros

Well not any in this new version

    Cons

That they took all of the features away that made Opera great like Bookmarks.Another Con is that CNET has that CNET Download Installer enabled for this Opera Download. It shows it is Enabled no matter wether I am signed in or not.I don't see there Installer on the other Browsers. So if and when Opera can get things right I would recommend that you Download it somewhere else.
Tip: Avoid CNET Download.com's ad-supported installer by using the Direct Download Link

    Summary

It is ashame that Opera 15 was released like this with many features gone like Bookmarks.CNET please take your CNET Download Installer off of this Download. Not on the other Browsers..Why ?????
Tip: Avoid CNET Download.com's ad-supported installer by using the Direct Download Link.

"It wasn't broke, so they fixed it."

    July 12, 2013  |   By swanjame

    Version: Opera 15.0.1147.130

    Pros

It vaguely resembles the old Opera genetically modified with Google and National Security Agency (NSA) genes.

    Cons

Sometimes fast, sometimes crash. I have liked Opera previously partly because of its independence from the big browsers. Now Google is the default, and the only, search engine allowed. Some of my apps from the old version transferred right over but some are not available on the new version.

    Summary

Opera has been changed to conform with and feed into the NSA database.

    "Warning - Don't download Opera!"

    July 12, 2013  |   By the_brigadier

    Version: Opera 15.0.1147.130

    Pros

None. This is a crappy little browser that uses Google as its search engine. It has a Yahoolike Newsfeed that constantly updates and most of it is garbage stories. That is the nicest thing I have to say about this software that should be allowed to die a natural death for being weak and worthless.

    Cons

Based on Cnet's four and a half stars review, I took the plunge. I chose the custom installation because I didn't want the toolbar they were touting with the express install. It asked me about it and clicking on decline, the effing installation installed the SweetSmart pack anyway and what I tried can't get rid of it. Not with Revo, Windows Program Uninstall, even advanced Search of EVERYTHING found nothing. I found a SweetSmart file in the X86 Programs folder and managed to delete it. A shred attempt with the Gutterman method wouldn't even start to work. The program moves around just like a virus.

Going online several websites treat the SweetSmart highjacking search engine as a virus. One site has a full page of steps that will take me a day to finish and I'm going to devote next Monday to the task. THE &*%$#*)))!!! Swedes who tricked downloaders into downloading their weak browser are making their money on the included high jacking software that's as pernicious as a Russian virus.

    Summary

Opera is an inferior browser with nice looking pictures and an accompanying program that invades your computer that is nearly impossible to get rid of that always pops up. I will not let it infect my computer by being passive and saying "Oh well" like the thousands of statements by people who were tricked into downloading this. Next Monday will tell if the system works and I will come back to give you all the link. Shame on you Cnet for being a party to this fraud. And Opera Software may you be consigned to Dante's final Malebolgia ring where fraudulent business people end up being buried heads down in the dirt up to their waist naked! That's too lenient for your fraud.

"Sorry to Say, but They RUINED OPERA!"

    July 12, 2013  |   By Cobalt27

    Version: Opera 15.0.1147.130

    Pros

    Visually "OK."

    Cons

It's warmed-over Google Chrome; it has no Opera-trademark sidebar (YUCK!); It's a rough copy of Chrome, that will just be a wanna-be browser now. It uses Chromium/Chrome's Webkit engine, NOT the unique Presto engine; etc., etc., etc.

    Summary

I've been a loyal user since it first went freeware in ~2001. Always enjoyed it previously, but tempted to simply uninstall it now. HOW does anyone who's used Chromium/Chrome think they're using *anything* other than a clone? Why waste your disk space? WHAT value has been created here, folks?
