"Nice free alternative that has some issues"

    April 14, 2010  |   By markcusdd

    Version: Opera Mini 5.0

    Pros

    Fast.
Can handle some sites that safari chokes on (ex. ign.com)
Password manager works better than safari.

    Cons

Only two zoom levels and the text is too small to read in the most zoomed out view.
Rendering is not correct on some web pages.
Auto-correct does not work in forms.

    Summary

It's a nice start but it needs refinements before it will replace safari for me. Not having auto-correct is a big one for me since it makes typing on the iPhone a pain. Everyone should try it though since it's free.

    "Not impressed"

    April 14, 2010  |   By vagreville

    Version: Opera Mini 5.0

    Pros

    Um...its free

    Cons

    Everything else

    Summary

I know why Apple approved this app...because its awful! I'm not a fanboy and I'm not a hater, I just know what works and what doesn't and this doesn't work. Good ideas, bad implementation.

    "Horrible Browser"

    April 14, 2010  |   By jpsalerno

    Version: Opera Mini 5.0

    Pros

The overall interface is well done. The 'start page' with bookmarks is a novel touch. In theory, browsing should be faster.

    Cons

First and foremost, the pages it renders are a complete mess. Compare ANY of the top websites to the Safari counterparts and you'll see what I mean. At best, the pages are ugly. At worst, they're downright useless. Why didn't CNET address this?

    Summary

Don't believe the hype. This browser isn't ready for prime-time. I gave it more than a quick spin mainly because I wanted to like it. In the end, it's pretty much useless. It's comical how misleading the review above is. Shouldn't take (most) people long to figure out how pathetic this browser really is.

THE BEST browser on the iPhone BY FAR is 'Perfect Browser 3'. I'ts a buck but well worth it. None of the ugly rendering mess of Opera. (pages look the way they're supposed to.) Tabs, full screen and the ability to lock the orientation are just a few of the cool features. Though it's trivial, the icon's also really cool (especially if you have a jailbroken iPhone with the Glass Orb Theme.)

    "A Welcomed Alternative to Safari"

    April 14, 2010  |   By diamondduq

    Version: Opera Mini 5.0

    Pros

Much quicker loading pages, nice use of thumbnails for tabbed browsing, all the nice features found in other Opera Mini browsers such as speed dial.

    Cons

Lack of multi-touch support is a killer, you're either zoomed or unzoomed with no in-between

    Summary

Obviously it's a matter of preference but as it's a free download, and who really knows how long Apple will allow it if it becomes successful, I definitely recommend trying Opera Mini for the iPhone. For the record I have replaced Safari as my default browser and am now using Opera Mini.

    "Just Average"

    April 12, 2010  |   By bjones37

    Version: Opera Mini 5.0

    Pros

Page loading is quicker on low speed connections. Speed dial bookmarking to keep track of favorites. Multitasking ability in tabbed browsing.

    Cons

No zoom capability, lacks multi-touch interface. Fairly ugly. Speed difference is not noticeable with 3G or wifi connection. Only loads mobile versions of web pages instead of iPhone optimized pages.

    Summary

While it has a few nice new goodies, it seemed to pass on all of the features that make the iPhone fun and cool. Unless you don't have a 3G or wifi connection, Safari is better choice.

    Updated on Apr 12, 2010

I was half wrong about multi-touch - only doesn't work on certain pages. My test pages were google and best buy (both in full site, not mobile versions.)
