Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.2
Pros: This is simply the best free office productivity suite out there. If you are running a small business and don't want to fork over the big bucks for MS Office(or if you are just a poor computer folk), this can do virtually everything the big names can. Also, if you are running an older computer, this suite might be better as it is smaller and requires less resources to operate. I don't think this suite is going to overtake Office 2k3 anytime soon, but it's worth to keep around.
Cons: Some people might be turned off by the slight learning curve involved because it is not MS Office. It works like every other office productivity suite, so most should find it easy to use.

"simply very, very good -- well worth looking at and using..."
Pros: This program has come a long way toward respectability as an MS Office alternative and has earned my respect in spades. Simply speaking, one can't knock this without a thorough test.
Cons: Not enough to make mention of.

"Microsoft office, but free! What more can you ask for?"
Pros: Basically, this program is microsoft office, for free. It offers basically the same programs, under different names and with different aesthetics.
But its pretty much the same thing. The file types are interchangable, openable in Office and OpenOffice, but also adds its only password protected file type, known as .ODT.
It runs off java, giving it a slightly slower loading time than normal, but makes for a smooth experience.
Cons: Doesnt have the same name as office... And a very big download for those on dialup or with a useage cap.

Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.2
Pros: OpenOffice is a real giant-killer. I've used MS Office for years, and even have a functional copy of Office 2003 Pro, but OOo does everything I need it to do, and does it for free. What's not to like?
I've found the word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation programs to be more than adequate, and worthy of comparision to MS Office. Compatibility with Office is good, and most Office files can be opened and edited with no difficulty. For my own use, however, I save everything in OOo's native OpenDocument format or to PDF (which OOo can do directly).
I'm not suggesting you dump MS Office if you already have it, but everyone should check out OOo before spending money on office software.
Cons: Not many "wizards", like MS Office. Not a big deal, though.
