"Not a bad suite of applications, but VERY slow."

    June 26, 2005  |   By producer

    Version: OpenOffice.org 1.1.3

    Pros

It's free. Handles basic tasks of the major office applications okay.

    Cons

Very slow. Presentation software doesn't come close to PowerPoint. Word processing lacks some of the functionality of MS Word. I haven't used the other things much.

    "Perfect Alternative"

    June 16, 2005  |   By tstevens20

    Version: OpenOffice.org 1.1.3

    Pros

This program is meant to be a free alternative to the ever harder to pirate and more expensive Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office is also not available for online download. It works great, and it's price is right on. Many people don't understand that this is a community supported, free program that you can alter yourself. The source is available, and if you don't like something or you want to add a feature, you can if you know how. I recommend this program to anyone who doesn't want to spend the well over $150 for Microsoft Office (depending on the version, it can be up to $400.)

    Cons

You can't critisize something that is free, that you can improve on yourself.

    "Solved my problem..."

    June 8, 2005  |   By Vitora

    Version: OpenOffice.org 1.1.3

    Pros

Wow! I can't believe this software is free--it does absolutely everything I need (as an amateur author) as far as word processing and even beyond, and it's just as good as Microsoft Word! I haven't even tried the other programs yet, but I'm sure if I need them they'll be just as good. It has the functions I was looking for (mainly replacing dashes, quotations marks, etc. with formatted ones) and opens all my old Word documents... I just moved to a new laptop and it didn't have Word, so instead of purchasing it I did some research and found this awesome program! Thanks, OpenOffice...

    Cons

I can't think of much that should be changed--maybe there could be fewer warning messages in relation to saving in different formats, but I'm sure there's an option to turn that off.

"Everything you need in one package."

    May 28, 2005  |   By BlueScreenLex

    Version: OpenOffice.org 1.1.3

    Pros

This is really great freeware software that allows you to do everything office related in one program. You can use their file types to save files, but you can also use the standard Microsoft Office file types as well. It has spell check in it which is something that is essential for me. It is also compatible with Linux and even comes with some Linux installation discs. If you don't feel like spending money for office software, then look no farther then openoffice.org.

    Pros

Good. But too features, better if it is the free version like the office 2003 standard edition trial version.

    Cons

Too less features especially the Impress(Presenter).I recommend you to use powerpoint as the features was too less.Too bad the generation version is 1.1.4,The coming version is 1.9 or 2.0,I bet it is 2.0.More features than 1.1.3 & 1.1.4 .

    Version: OpenOffice.org 1.1.3

    Pros

    Supports varraity of formats.

    Its free.

    Cons

-I can not see how it is any better than -microsoft works, or microsoft word.

-This is only good if you don't have microsoft word or works, because microsoft word is expensive.

"AHHHH. The free alternative to Microsoft, A+"

    May 8, 2005  |   By delafoo

    Version: OpenOffice.org 1.1.3

    Pros

My Microsoft Word became corrupt. I didn't feel like manually restoring the .dll files it lost. So, I downloaded this puppy. It automatically converts Word files to open office files. AND, you can re-convert back to Word, or just use Open Office, and save it Word Format!!! If you have any experience with Word, and are fairly apt with your PC, then this Free word processing utility is something you should consider.... It comes bundeled with a Word Alternative, a Powerpoint Alternative, a Quickbooks Alternative and MORE. Several hundred dollars if you would buy it from Microsoft. Free, and safe from Sun Microsystems (they make processors and software in CA), this is a MUST HAVE utility!!!

    Cons

Cons: That I didn't find out about it sooner!

    "Dump MS Office!"

    April 21, 2005  |   By blackadder4

    Version: OpenOffice.org 1.1.3

    Pros

Wink, wink... IBM are going OpenOffice and saving MILLIONS in licence fees to Microsoft. It's going to be a HUGE corporate product over the next year or so! Run on Linux with Firefox and Thunderbird and who needs Microsoft anymore? Bill Gates is quaking in his boots...

    Cons

Some flaws, interface not so slick, but just watch as Sun & IBM pump this product up.
