"Good, but is it fully compatible with MS Word?"
Version: OpenOffice.org 3.4.1
Pros
It is a good word processor. I do not know what improvements the latest versions have.
Cons
I used it about 7 years ago when I went to a cafe internet, but they did not have MS Word. I downloaded OpenOffice and tried to use it for some Word documents. I had compatibility problems. I got frustrated. I downloaded it at a later date when Word was not working and later on uninstalled it when I did not need it anymore. It did not have some features I needed. I suppose that the new version is much better, but I do not know. I currently use MS Word and extra programs for features MS Word does not have. I am a fan of the CesarUSA Text Editor BS2, which works with the RTF, TXT, and HTML formats, is very simple to use, has autocompletion of words in multiple languages and it is going to include support for doc and docx files.

How much is your time worth? I spent weeks experimenting with free office software and in the end I decided to just buy a genuine copy of Micrsoft Office for ~$100 and be done with it.

"Not usable for me"
Version: OpenOffice.org 3.4.1
Pros
Free. Adequate for letter writing, creating lists, programs, etc., keeping a simple spreadsheet.
Cons
Not useful if you need to share documents with Word users.
Summary
Even Word DOC files are likely to be garbled if they contain graphics, tables, figures, tables of content, indexes. In the past, I've tried previous ooo versions in hopes that they can be an MS Office substitute, but they have all had the same shortcomings. And, of course, the incompatibility between ooo and MS Office macros is a critical problem.
If you need something that you can use to write letters, or produce other simple documents, especially if you do not need to share the files (except with other ooo users), this might be the software suite for you. -
"Apache Open Office 3.4.1 crashes"
Version: OpenOffice.org 3.4.1
Pros
I have used Open Office for years and loved it.
Cons
after 3.4.1 installed anytime I open up an odt doc file it crashes every couple seconds for about 8 times before it finally stops. I am updating our high school 50th reunion files and it is very important the crashes are fixes asap.
Summary
I have spent hours on the net trying to find a solution to ooO crashes. Some posts I do not understand what they are talking about and I thought I was pretty good with solving pc problems. Or at least solve a problem by following others fixes. I have signed into open office web site for solutions but they aren't any help with fixing these crashes. I have tried a couple suggestions but the problem always returns, crashes.
