    "Successful Use Of OOo"

    October 01, 2007

    Version: OpenOffice.org 2.3.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Several years ago I was able to quit using MS Office.
I use OpenOffice.org, the X11 version, on Mac OS X.
I use it at home and at the office.
My staff of 4 had little difficulty with the switch.

I am very pleased with OOo.

However, at the moment the Aqua version does not allow one to select attributes for the printer (tray, duplex, etc).

    "Great work"

    October 23, 2005   |   By spass_dabei

    Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0rc3

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is really great. OO is an excellent alternative to high priced office suits like MS Office, and it's free. It reads and writes Microsoft files. Impress supports hyphenation, while PowerPoint and Keynote don't. The X Windows Interface is not Aqua, true, but using Apples X11 ist just a plain easy. Just a few days ago, the devolpers have made public that the next version of OO for Mac will be ported using cocoa, which is a lot more complicated than the X11 port, and we should be really grateful for that. Those who don't know what OO is about, should just shut up.

2006 is ahead and Open Office still sleeping. May should some commercial group produce an aqua build and take some $19 for it than working over X11

    "Impressing.."

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This application suite is progressing nicely. I can't wait for text boxes to appear. The current method doesn't translate well when opening the document in MS Word. Otherwise this is as useful as need be to topple MSOffice. Once the native interface (NonJava) is introduced we'll really be rockin', Perhaps that's when we'll see Apple get involved? They already want us using it as they include X11 with the OS..

    Summary

A native OS X GUI would be great, but it works quite well in X11. This will topple MS Office in the long run, can't compete with free.

    "Powerful but isolated in X11..."

    December 04, 2003   |   By hanske

    Version: OpenOffice.org 1.0.3

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been trying to make friends with OpenOffice today, but ran into several limitations, due to the fact that it runs in the X11 environment. I was trying to import and reformat a web page, but that is infinitely easier in the native OS X environment.

Also, OO seems to be too inspired by Word - I get lost all the time trying to figure out how to do things. After one hour I still don't understand how to find hard returns and remove them by a search and replace, for example.

I found that you can print to PDF natively, but the files that come out won't open in Acrobat or Preview. Also tried to export to Word, but the formatting didn't make it all the way (two comumns and a graph, centered on the page came out as one column and no graph).

Another thing is that Japanese apparently does not work well (according to a Japanse Mac mag, haven't tried myself because you need to install special software).

It's a shame, because there is a lot of power in this application. Wonder if Apple will do something with it? But a native Cocoa word processor would probably be sweeter... Still hope a Carbon version will surface in a not too distant future. or at least 1.3, which is supposed to support PDF well.

    "Much better, but . . ."

June 24, 2003   |   By Phil St. Romain

    Version: OpenOffice.org 1.0.3

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The menu fonts are so awful compared to 1.0.1 that it takes all the fun out of this version. I've tried changing them but no improvement. Disappointing! Otherwise, it seems a little snappier than the previous version.
