The Open Source movement that has taken place on the Internet as well as the legal issues associated with Peer-to-Peer file sharing influenced this piece. It is my hope that this work will function as a bridge between the illegalities of music piracy and the positive prospects of the Open Source movement.
Open Polyphonica features "sampled" sounds from the "everyday"; sounds whose ownership I feel is debatable, if not absent. The user now enjoys the ability to mix music from the samples with the freedom of not having to financially compensate anyone, yet at the same time, they are restricted from enjoying any financial gain from their ?inspired mix?. Thereby, the music produced, and the program itself, avoids becoming a commodity and remains free for anyone with a computer to enjoy.
