    "Download Problem"

    January 8, 2012  |   By Macattacc

    Pros

Wanted to download onyx through CNET with expectation that CNET would be a reliable source.

    Cons

After download, the only thing that showed up was X11.

    Summary

So, X11 is on my Mac. There is nothing to indicate that Onyx is installed, unless this is actually the product. Since X11 seems to be an unexpected artifact, I started to look for ways to delete it. Since this is a Mac where file management is basically impossible for an average user, and the purpose of Onyx is to clean up "unwanted" stuff...I am at an impasse. So, for me, no joy!

If you need to uninstall an application on your computer, download the free "App Cleaner" application. If Onyx is installed, it will find it. Onyx and X11 are two different applications and shouldn't be confused.

I don't download here; always go to macupdate.com. There's no valid reason, I have to admit. I just prefer it. But you should have no trouble installing Onyx. All you do is double click on the file you downloaded, which opens the disc image, then follow the instruction telling you to drag the Onyx.app to the applications folder.

X11 is the default window management system for osx and most all unix/linux operating systems. If you are that new to unix you probably should stay away from trying to modify your system even with this tool. I would recommend installing a linux distro on a old computer and getting your feet wet with that. You will get a lot more help from the linux community and most of what you learn can be applied to Mac as well.
