Windows Firewall and other free firewalls do a pretty good job of keeping threats away from your computer, but many users prefer the extra security and support of a premium firewall. Emsisoft's Online Armor is a shareware firewall suite that offers strong protection against malicious programs, hacker attacks, and other privacy and security threats, but it's also designed to be as unobtrusive as possible while doing it. Its real-time protection means no lengthy scans; instead, Online Armor evaluates each program as it runs. The program has plenty of configuration options, especially in its Advanced Mode. For instance, you can block traffic from specific countries known to host hackers. There's a good Help file and other resources to sort it all out for you. Online Armor is free to try for 30 days. The latest release supports Windows 8.

You'll need to temporarily disable your antivirus software while installing Online Armor, though the program plays nicely with most antivirus tools when it's up and running. Online Armor has four main components: Firewall, Web Shield, Program Guard, and Anti-Keylogger. Users can choose from three modes: Standard, Advances, and Banking Mode; there's also a Learning Mode that creates rules automatically. You can disable all protections except for the firewall by activating or deactivating the proprietary HIPS system, too. Online Armor's configuration dialog serves as its main interface, but we found the best way to access and manage both the firewall and other features is through its extensive System Tray menu, which we could open by right-clicking either the program's main tray icon or the Firewall Status icon.

Online Armor works like other robust firewalls we've tried, adding programs to its white list when you OK them to run. Its pop-up notifications give more options than some similar tools. We found Online Armor's default filters to be a bit stronger than some similar tools, too, which is good but requires you to pay attention to what it flags. Is Online Armor worth paying for over popular free firewalls? It's hard to prove a negative, but what's the price on your data, your privacy, and your identity?

Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of Emsisoft Online Armor Firewall 6. The trial version is limited to 30 days.

"Bloated Mess!"

November 21, 2012  |  By ITepb

 |  Version: Online Armor Free 5.5

Pros

It's a Free Firewall.

Cons

Installs to over 70 MB!
Has 4 "Modes" that bombard you with unnecessary popups and permissions.
No reboot needed after install, but needed after is "scans" PC for programs.
Confusing popups, Allow internet access, but then have to allow "programs wants to connect to the internet" as well.
PC hung up on reboot because of to many allow prompts for tons of programs that just need to run, but it was asking for permission.

Summary

This is way more then just a firewall. After reboot I was able to disable all its extra "features" and just use the Firewall part. Which is not that bad, but 70MB is just to much. This is way overkill for most users, and the barrage of prompts was a major turn off right away. I would chose a different firewall, perhaps, TinyWall or Sphinx Windows Firewall, they are small and free.

"Good HIPS, some problems with open ports."

October 08, 2012  |  By Moral_Technology

 |  Version: Online Armor Free 5.5

Pros

Online Armor has:
Good Host Intrusion Prevention.
Lightweight.
Stealths the most critical ports.

Cons

After extended use, you'll notice that some ports (5357) and other ports will mysteriously open up. This is very irregular behavior for a firewall, especially considering that I wasn't running any applications that required monitoring for inbound connections.
Lack of IP Filtering.

Summary

Online Armor Free isn't a firewall you necessarily want to use unless you plan on staying behind a router. It has a tendency to automatically create rules that allow inbound connections, rather than either just denying it or asking the user what they want to do.

Sometimes, these inbound rules might compromise your system. For example, it opened up port 1025 and 5357 on my computer.

"Solid, Safe, Easy and Free Firewall"

June 18, 2012  |  By AVM1986

 |  Version: Online Armor Free 5.5

Pros

+ Great detection rate with anti-malware component
+ Little memory usage, even when using two components in the background.

Cons

- Install process takes a long time
- Restart after update (at least after first install completed)

Summary

I'm always using emsisoft emergency kit and it never failed me because of great detection.
Emsisoft has one of the best anti-malware detection in the world and it appears to be correct during malware tests through youtube video's.
This is why i chose online armor free for extra protecten and it's a great addition to panda free cloud (also one of the best detection rates, especially for a free program).
If online armor does not detect certain malware and virusses, then panda free will. So for me it's a great combo pack and it's free.
Never tried ashampoo and zonealarm firewall, but i did try comodo firewall(has great malware detection also) and i did not like it because of bugs (blackscreen when opening full screen programs) and intrusive program pop-ups with several processes for one program. (from 3 to 4 allow/block questions)
Online Armor Free does not have this problem and it's not in the way once you have set everything to their natural order. (to the way it used to be)
I allowed all my current programs during install (only do this when you are sure you have no malware and virusses) and once back in windows i allowed and blocked my current programs through firewall rules.
Now i only get one allow/block question when installing or opening a new program.
Explanation about the color coded row through firewall interface would have been great.
But in this case it's: Each row is color coded to indicate whether the program is set to Run Safer (blue), Installer (yellow), Trusted (green), Not Trusted (red), Unknown (salmon), or is no longer present (gray).
Looked it up and still don't know if i have to block or delete gray entries, but according to several people it can be deleted.
Online Armor looks like a complicated firewall (not for the faint of heart at start), but it's not at all. It's so much easier than for example comodo firewall.

Forget to mention something, there's even a Mail Shield built into it.
Description here: Online Armor filters your incoming email. If Online Armor detects a suspect email, it will alert you (and if you run Online Armor AV+ emails will also be scanned for viruses)

Only previous reviewer is correct about something.
'Remember my answer' feature seems to work at first, then alerts again and again when trying to use same programs, requiring shut-down to allow me to use them.

I only had this issue with anti-keylogger.
Clicked allow and remember all the time, but it does not accept and i do not get any info about the exe file.
With games, this is very intrusive and annoying.

Again i was to early with score and enthusiasm.
Rather download panda or mse and comodo firewall for free solution.
Comodo has it's issues also, but it also passed a lot of tests in anti-malware and detection.
But ofcourse you can also use online armor without anti-keylogger.
Because it's very intrusive.

"Learning function needs some tweaking"

June 10, 2012  |  By oldad1955

 |  Version: Online Armor Free 5.5

Pros

Fairly easy install. No extra spam-ware as far as I could tell. Been using freeware version for a few months and it is effective to a point.

Cons

Constantly re-informing firewall that this or that program is safe or intended to be used. 'Remember my answer' feature seems to work at first, then alerts again and again when trying to use same programs, requiring shut-down to allow me to use them. 'Trusted Program' list is virtually useless. Very intrusive program.

Summary

Due to necessity to disable numerous times to be able to use many programs I am uninstalling this program now. There are far better, less intrusive programs, even 'free' ones that I can use. Some may like each and every file that opens when using a program to cause alerts and having to re-inform the firewall that it is safe, but it just tires me out.

"Superior Firewall"

May 04, 2012  |  By senosen

 |  Version: Online Armor Free 5.5

Pros

Superior filtering of all program/processess without to much noise. Great for learning whats going on under the hood. It flagued a simple link test that other more popular ones missed. This version works with very low memory and does not try to install anything other than the program.

Cons

Difficult to install. It takes a lot of time to scan your system. Had to reboot 2 times. Not for the beginner but we al must learn some time...

Summary

Great free product with lots of features for monitoring your system.
