"Once ahead of the pack. Now behind."

March 18, 2014  |  By M29231

 |  Version: OmniOutliner 4.0.3

Pros

The Omni Group developed several winning apps: OmniGraffle, OmniFocus. And at one time, OmniOutliner was ahead of the competition with its simple interface and elegant features.

It still is ahead of its main rivals in that it does columns and syncs with iPad and iPhone. I sometimes do an outline on my desktop and tden read from it on my tablet. So, these aren't to be sneezed at, I suppose.

Cons

With the exceptions of the hybrid column/outline interface, and syncing, Curio does everything else 10 times better and adds more thoughtful features.

"Great outliner with attachments, subtotals, formatting"

July 07, 2011  |  By AWolfe_II

 |  Version: OmniOutliner 3.9.5

Pros

toss anything into the outline, you're good!
any number of columns with labels and data types
aggregation functions track running subtotals
"drill-in" or "focus" like omnifocus
works almost like a spreadsheet
extensive control of outline formatting

Cons

for a task manager, you may want OmniFocus instead
no easy way to pivot or regroup on alternate columns
default styles not the prettiest
may trick user into distorting non-tree data into an outline structure

Summary

OmniOutliner is a terrific tool. I have used it for years. The ability to drag, drop, cut, paste anything is great.
It often feels like a spreadsheet with really useful grouping.
Very useful for exploring task breakdowns with rollups
whoa, nice ability to format!

"Not cheap, but worth the price"

March 15, 2005  |  By bwapin

Summary

OmniOutliner, at $40, isn't cheap. But it's well worth the investment - it's a great companion to a word processor, and I use it for all sorts of lists. I've never found another tool like it, so it was a no-brainer to pony up.

"Yes, I agree . . ."

OmniOutliner's columns provide an additional dimension the notebook apps lackâ??the resulting matrices provide a way of organizing & displaying information an order of magnitude superior to those that lack columns or tables. Still waiting for integration with OmniGraffle tho.

The people at Omni really deserve every star there is. This new version of OmniOutliner reeks of quality and beauty. Another work of art (just look at OmniWeb if you don't know what I mean!)

Wow what a huge improvement to a great app.
I'm going to wait for OmniOutliner 3 Pro though. It will cost more but I'm a deluxe kind of guy.
Hope they release it soon.

What's new in version 2.1.1
New Features since 2.1
  • Added importing and exporting of OPML.
    • The value of the status checkbox is stored in the _status attribute. If no rows have this attribute when loading an OPML file then the status checkboxes are hidden. The legal values for this attribute are "unchecked", "checked", "indeterminate", and "none". The default value is "unchecked".
    • The notes are stored in the _note attributes.
    • Newlines are encoded as numbered character references.
    • The type of all columns loaded from an OPML file are set to Text
    • Extra column values are exported in attributes derived from the column title. We remove characters that are not valid for XML attribute names from the title and then add numbers to the end of the title if we need to make it unique. (In case more than one column has the same name.)
  • I don't think we handle hexadecimal character references yet. (i.e. ⌘)
  • French (by Xavier Destombes) and Japanese (by Joshua Done) localizations.
Enhancements since 2.1
  • Typing into the notes area should be much more responsive. Typing into the outline may also be quicker.
  • Use live resizing to make resizing the window feel snappier.
  • Added sort by status menu.
  • You don't need to be editing to show or hide the ruler in the outline view now.
Bug Fixes
  • The app would crash if you created a new item, edited it, and then tried to move it via drag-and-drop without clicking somewhere else first. We fixed that.
  • In the second beta, you had to click on the level style list entry between every font change, or the selection would go out to lunch. It would update the item you were editing in the document instead of the level style in some cases, and lose the selection altogether in some other cases. All should be working properly in this release.
  • Several fixes for increased compatibility with Mac OS 10.2.x
  • Handle sorting of popup columns.
  • Make sure outline gets resorted when you change checkboxes or popups (Bug #5457).
  • Fixed bug introduced in 2.0.1 (v30) where style information was lost from copied text.
  • Don't allow editing of summary values, as this will just make the summaries wrong.
  • Don't allow editing of hidden summary values. This could happen by using the arrow keys during editing to go into the hidden row.
  • Exported HTML really uses UTF-8 character encoding. Previously non-ASCII characters were encoded as numbered character references, which makes editing the generated file difficult. We now include a meta element to specify the content-type/character encoding so that web browsers can view these files properly.
  • Undo bugs
    • Fixed undo with respect to setting the alignment on a column. With rich text individual rows can have different alignments, so when a column has left alignment, to undo a "set right alignment" you can't just set the alignment of all the values back to left alignment.
    • Set undo action name correctly when you redo an "Add Column" change.
  • Set the undo action names when you use the spacebar to toggle checkbox status.
  • Fixed minor drawing bug -- when you were editing an item and then clicked in another item to edit, it highlighted the old row and then unselected it.
  • Select newly created rows when they are pasted into an outline, and scroll the document so the first of the pasted rows is visible.
  • When converting text columns to numbers it is much more forgiving about the format. It uses the number format specified in the International System Preferences, and skips any text before the number. This means you can change a column with "$ 4,199.95" to a number column and get 4199.95. However we still don't have an option for using localized formats for display.
