    "The Kiiller App get's better"

    June 12, 2003  |   By ncianca

    Version: NoteTaker 1.5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Wow! This app get's better and better all the time. Virtually every issue has been addressed and fixed in this release and it feels rock solid. NoteTaker has become indespensible for me, I live in this program on a daily basis to keep track of my notes, project plans, database schemas, flow and wireframe diagrams, reference materials, work logs, projects for the kids and all kinds of other things. I used to use the Finder as a kind of storage cabinet, but NoteTaker really helps to tie everything together in a way that was not possible before.

Frequently, I hear comparisons being made between NoteTaker and "Scrapbook" manager programs, such as the very good DevonThink or Alepin which are like the drawer that you put everything in that doesn't need it's own notebook. Scrapbook managers also work well as companions to NoteTaker. But NoteTaker isn't a scrapbook manager. Sometimes you hear that it's an outliner, but it's really not. It's a digital notebook and that's the differece. Yeah, it's structure might look like an outliner, but that's just a means of helping organize the information in the notebook. It also has no problems importing outliner data from programs such as OmniOutliner, which I also use (though I admit I have been using it less since NoteTaker came out in January).

I have notebooks now that are very large and this version is much faster then previous releases, especially when saving.

I find that NoteTaker makes very good use of the screen real estate and I happen to like having the sprial and the tabs. When people see NoteTaker on my computer, they immediately get a sense of what the program is for.

Another cool thing is the web deployed notebooks. I can take project/meeting notes along with todo's and post them for my staff to access right off my TiBook. Very handy.

There aren't many apps that I want to give 10 stars (out of the available 5), but NoteTaker is certainly one of those few that have made a difference in how I work. I think some people will "get it" and others will still use the Finder as a filing cabinet. For me, NoteTaker is definitely in the killer app category.

    "Bugged off"

    June 12, 2003  |   By Lex Luthor--2008

    Version: NoteTaker 1.5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I am finding numerous redraw bugs with the top dragable area and also with the notebook drawer which has turned red and then transparent leaving draging/moving the notebook impossible - even after restarts and opening up new notebooks ( OS 10.2.6 )- Trying to see past this very bad bug - 1.5 does seem more thought out than version one and is maybe easier to pick up and use than the 'Circus ponies' notebook.
But I would still like to see the ability to be able sketch/draw within the notebook as well as just the obligatory pasting and typing - both 'Circus ponies' and 'notetaker'03' still seem in the infant stage of development of a realworld notebook metaphor, but at least 'Circus ponies soft' had the balls to offer an upgrade price which is more in keeping with the early development stage of it's app. I may get flamed for this review but $70 bucks is real money for alot of us and for that kinda cash outlay I expect a little more.

    "Quantum leap forward..."

    Version: NoteTaker 1.5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The new version (1.5) adds tons more features than what's listed above, making this "killer app" even more user-friendly than it already is. Not only is it more elegant than before, it's even easier now to share information gathered in your notebooks with others.

My favorite new feature is the one-click email, which pastes a selected page or entry in a new email, ready to be sent to a friend or colleague.

If you do a lot of research on the web, you'll find the Services feature indispensable. It allows you to send clippings right to any particular notebook or page you designate, without leaving your browser. I would recommend downloading IceCoffEE, which puts Mac OS X's Services menu right on top of your menu bar.

NoteTaker can also be used in ways that are not mentioned on AquaMind's website. I use it to archive my emails so that all emails related to a project are within that project's notebook.

It's impossible to describe fully what this app can do. You really need to download it yourself and try it out for 30-days (for free).

Next to Mail and Safari, this is the most used app on my computer.

"Notetaker will become my auxilliary brain ..."

    May 1, 2003  |   By Ra McGuire

    Version: NoteTaker 1.1.3

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
once I settle on the way i'm going to use it. It is an extremely versatile and customizable environment - perfect for an anal note-keeper like yours truly.

I have had a few little problems and was amazed by the prompt and useful responses I received. My most recent question was answered in less time than I would have taken to type it! I get the feeling there is a commited team behind this product working hard to turn it into something extraordinary.
