Once you explore the power of NoteTab Pro, you may find this text editor beautiful despite its off-putting interface. The Pro version adds tag highlighting and allows you to program your own features. The left-hand column displays a list of commands, called clips, that do anything from inserting bits of text to generating code. Each library, the roster of which appears as buttons at the bottom of the screen, contains its own set of clips. The FTP library, for example, lets you create server profiles, connect, upload and download files, and issue various commands. The publisher's site offers many user-created libraries, or you can make your own. You can create your own clips by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2 and edit them easily.
The Tidy HTML clip (in the HTML and Utilities libraries) incorporates the free download HTML Tidy, available on Download.com. While the TopStyle library similarly requires a CSS editor of that name, we couldn't get it to work. We would like to see a trial of the spelling and thesaurus features, too. NoteTab Pro isn't a tool for casual users, but power users and programmers should find plenty to love.

You can handle multiple large files with a simple tabbed interface, use a spelling checker and thesaurus, format text, use multiple undo, and bookmark documents. You can build templates, use powerful systemwide searches, and do global multiline replacements.
Its Clipbook feature lets you create and organize clips, which can range from text macros to complete mini-applications using a simple scripting language with enough features to satisfy any power user; a bunch of handy clip libraries is included.
Other features include text-to-HTML conversion, tag stripping, and tools for adding links and color codes. Version 4.92 fixes issues that were introduced in the previous version.
