Once you explore the power of NoteTab Light, you may find this text editor beautiful despite its off-putting interface. The left-hand column displays a list of commands, called clips, that do anything from inserting bits of text to generating code. Each library, the roster of which appears as buttons at the bottom of the screen, contains its own set of clips. The FTP library, for example, lets you create server profiles, connect, upload and download files, and issue various commands. The HTML library auto-completes HTML tags. The publisher's site offers many user-created libraries, or you can make your own. You can create your own clips by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2 and edit them easily.
The Tidy HTML clip (in the HTML and Utilities libraries) incorporates the free download HTML Tidy, available on Download.com. While the TopStyle library similarly requires a CSS editor of that name, we couldn't get it to work. NoteTab Light isn't a tool for casual users, but power users and programmers should find plenty to love.
Publisher's description
From Fookes Software :NoteTab Light is a free Notepad replacement and HTML editor. Move quickly around large files with a tabbed interface, and format your text. Write with the font of your choice, fixed width or proportional. If you need to cut and paste chunks from a pile of files, you can set up a Paste Board file to save text clips automatically. Strip HTML tags from your files. Call up complete document statistics instantly. Use system-wide search and replace tools. Speed up your work with text macros; you can use them as shortcuts, or even to auto-replace recurring typos. Sample macro libraries are supplied, and you can easily build your own.

Version: NoteTab Light 4.95
Pros: I'm looking for a NotePad alternative, and this one has a lot of features at your fingertips...
Cons: The free version does NOT give you line numbers, which is the #1 reason to use a NotePad replacement. It generally lacks basic ease of use. For example, it tabs opened documents, but there's no X to close each tab. It does not color-code anything, not even CSS, XML or HTML. The "macro" features may be nice, but you would only use a few of them in very rare cases -- they really just takes up screen space.
