Version: Norton Internet Security 2010
"Improved yet one major fault remains."
Pros: Improved yet one major fault remains. So much of the good things I've read about it are true but it still has one big issue that I can't overlook.
Cons: Looks great & scans fast but it has an unforgivable number of false positives.
Summary: I have an ESET Smart Security license good through 5-2010. Needing a reformat of my Vista Ultimate system anyway, I had a look at this 2009 version of Norton. Onb a clean machine with a corrupt, unrepairable driver, I removes my ESET. Installed this, scanned full & it detected 9 viruses. Two in the registry & seven infected files. Needless to say, this is foolish. I reformatted, installed the same programs & added the exact same data, scanned with ESET & its as clean as a whistle. This is completely unacceptable & for this reason I will not recommend this product.

After 5 maddening years with Norton Internet security and the 4 with a Bit Defender product that started out OK but then went down the drain with recent releases, I tried ESET NOD32, but other than the small footprint I was unimpressed -- especially at that price. So I grit my teeth and decided to try Norton Internet Security 2009. I couldn't believe that it installed so quickly (no-reboot required), and had an even smaller footprint than NOD32 (which was merely an AV)!! There have been a few minor issues/quirks, but less than I've had with any other security program. And NOT ONE false positive, quite unlike Bit Defender. Their Forums are extremely helpful (lots of Symantec employees and experts posting), and the often-frustration India-based Mail & Chat support has been improving. I like NIS 2009 so much I'm reticent to upgrade. Oh, and as for price, CNET currently reports that Fry's is now selling it for 3 users for $9.99 with mail-in rebates!

NOD 32 is not perfect either. I had it for many years prior to NIS 2009. This version of Norton found a virus that NOD32 did not. I'm trying to decide if I should go with the new version or stay with the (now much cheaper 2009)

If you have Nod32 there really is no mreason to switch in my opinion. Even if Norton has imporoved its speed and performance Nod 32 is still fast and non intrusive. Unless your someone that needs to have the Big Huge GUI screens and graphics.

I found your summary interesting as I have Nortons 2009 installed and in the last 3 months it has been detecting some of my own programmed software as viruses.
I am not sure what antivirus program to purchase when my Nortons 2009 expires in January 210 -
What? You're full of sh*t!! When you look at AV-comparatives' website, it SHOWS Norton is among the software with the fewest false positives. Stop lying for some other company and get your facts straight!!

:) okay, norton not only won AV test in av-comparatives but also win IS test for in pc world...

:) to all the hater out there after testing & researching, i can confirm that its not only use less hdd(11mb)/cpu(in-active:1%/scan:10-50%)/ram(in-active:2-4mb/menu-screen:7-14mb/quick-scan:12-16mb/full-scan:5-10mb according to my task manager by average) & update/scan alot faster than avg/avast/nod32/kaspersky/mcafee/microsoft etc but also...
AV Test Result:
ok, avira get the highest detection rate but even some lousy brand can do almost as good as that w false positive(F/P), so basically, this charts(a bit old since there r no new one out there for now) confirm that if the F/P take into account, norton 2009 beta(not complete ver), could be better than avira(& keep in mind detection doesn't mean it can remove)...

Hi:
I think you give a good review. All I want to say is, to be fair, I have had good luck with 2009 so far. I have it on two pc's. I personally have not gotten any false positives in the 3+ months I have used it.
I think the uninstall is a point I can more identify with. It as well as other Norton products are difficult to unintall. It even took a Norton Teck some time(but he did have the right tool and got it done). We did a removal and reinstall.
What type of system do you run? and what is ESET Smart Suite.
thank you for your opinion and review!
