"windows 7 problem"
Version: Nikon SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 ED 4.0.0.0
Pros
Rather than buy anything new, I simply kept one of my old desktops as an XP machine. It worked great it the old days, why not now? The only thing that machine does now is run the Nikon scanner, it isn't even on the network. To be hygenic I transfer files with a flash drive to a Windows 7 machine ON the network with adequate antivirus coverage.
Cons
Mildly inconvenient, but hardly the end of the world.

"why bother!"
Version: Nikon SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 ED 4.0.0.0
Pros
small download
Cons
doesn't work in windows 7 - install XP virtual machine and it does not recognize the scanner as an available device.
Summary
without a driver to introduce the scanner to windows 7 (that seems unavailable) the program is worthless. Nikon suggests one of two ($$$$) applications to use the scanner with Win7 - what did I pay $2,000.00 for!
