"Tries to extort money"

October 24, 2008  |  By feliusrex

 |  Version: Network Magic 5.0.8282.0

Pros

Dishonest subscription policies

Cons

Not well supported

Summary

Cisco recently bought out the original company, and within 2 weeks pushed out a 'update'. This update uninstalled the previous version, and then demanded a new yearly subscription fee to run the program. It took me 6 hours to uninstall the 'update' and restore my computer to the previous state, since the newly installed program does not have any uninstall options, it had to be done manually, editing the registry in several places.. I've been using Network Magic for over two years and been mostly satisfied, until now. Do not trust Network Magic with your money.

"Its good but no longer supported"

November 01, 2013  |  By pentilly143

 |  Version: Network Magic 5.0.8282.0

Pros

It was good when it worked.

Cons

No longer supported, doesn't work.

Summary

I used to have this application and it worked well but it is no longer supported. So I searched around and found HomeNet Manager. It works just as well. I got him from this link:

http://www.homenetmanager.com but I think you can download it on CNET as well.

"It was OK before Cisco took over"

January 14, 2009  |  By sentence

 |  Version: Network Magic 5.0.8282.0

Pros

Nothing of the free version is of any use

Cons

Since I don't have a chanse to rest the full version I don't want to pay Cisco for a black hole. They could at least let you test it for 30 days

Summary

It was OK before then I changed my network and downloaded the new version which was of no use

"Worked the first time"

December 31, 2008  |  By usms

 |  Version: Network Magic 5.0.8282.0

Pros

Quick download to both computers. Quick install, quick solution to my file sharing requirements.

Cons

Remembered that I had installed it several years ago on the 2nd computer1

Summary

If you need to share files across your home network like I did. I have 3 external drives attached to the basement computer that have photos and video stored on them that I need to add to a video that I was making on my laptop. This software just made it exceptionally easy for me to do just that. Not sure what else it is good for, but for me and with it being on sale today it was worth the 23 bux to save all the rest of my time.

Updated on Dec 31, 2008

Just added my Rovio Robot to the system and it accepted it just as a web camera.

"Don't know an upgrade from an update"

December 26, 2008  |  By dickward

 |  Version: Network Magic 5.0.8282.0

Pros

It was a good product that I had purchased a couple of years ago. Sharing folders & printers works well.

Cons

When Cisco took over nad notified you to "update" to version 5.0, you found that you were treated as a stranger and asked for $29.99 to use it.

Summary

Definitions:
Update ... a newer version of the same product, free to users.

Upgrade:
A new product... pay up again.

Updated on Dec 26, 2008

If you have never owned this product, it would be fine for you.

They just got the old customers ticked off with the new cost.

You have to look within the new version status in order to find how to go back to your older version.

"Don't start."

December 25, 2008  |  By psychrat

 |  Version: Network Magic 5.0.8282.0

Pros

If there were any, I do not remember what they were.

Cons

Do not open your door or Computer system to this company. They will take your money. And take your money. Then they will take your money.

Summary

this is my recent email to Cisco, which explains my view:

Allow me to add my voice to what I hope to be a multitude of unhappy customers regarding your recent marketing scheme ("Upgrade to NM 5.0"). This was so poorly handled that, in my mind, your company has reached the status of "Complete Scam Artist."

Reputable companies do not:

~ Trick people into buying upgrades by concealing the cost until it is too late
~ Require their customers to spend time trying to understand what is actually occurring
~ Force people to undo changes that they did not want in the first place

I can only assume that enough people pulled out their credit cards that you do not care about those of us that feel conned, but perhaps enough of us will voice our concerns about your tactics to other people that your new customer base (aka "suckers that pay for things that you can do by yourself for free") will dwindle considerably. Like tobacco companies, if you fail to get your clients when they are 'young' and unexperienced, you will certainly not get them later.

Updated on Dec 28, 2008

I agree with what others have posted here. I did find the product handy and easy to use.

I also do not have a problem in paying for upgrades; I have done so many times with other software. However, I still object to lack of transparency from Cisco and it has diminished my respect for this company.

"Good company gone bad?"

December 12, 2008  |  By dwall058

 |  Version: Network Magic 5.0.8282.0

Pros

Good product if you have not bought it in the past.

Cons

If you have, stick with your version prior to 5.0. After Cisco bought Pure, they decided to milk current customers for an "upgrade". After install, you discover it costs to keep or you have to delete and reinstall your previous version.

Summary

Good product. But since Cisco bought it, it's characterized by sleazy marketing and attempts to milk their customer base.

"Cisco has some splainin to do."

December 08, 2008  |  By benhoff2

 |  Version: Network Magic 5.0.8282.0

Pros

I don't like anything about the upgrade.

Cons

It looks like Cisco has removed a major feature and started charging for updates. I wonder if the feature was removed because it competed with a more expensive feature of a Cisco product. I hope not.

Summary

Cisco needs to explain why they don't honor contract and have removed major feature from Network Magic.

"GREAT PRODUCT, EASY TO USE, GREAT TECH SUPPORT !!!!!"

December 08, 2008  |  By BlueSkyMike

 |  Version: Network Magic 5.0.8282.0

Pros

Great Software, easy to both install and use, with great FREE technical support via telephone from a REAL AND VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE human being in the U.S.!!!

Cons

None I have yet found (only had it for two days).

Summary

I bought a D-Link Wireless N Router and D-Link Xtreme N Wireless PCI adapter (total cost after Circuit City and manufacturer rebates of $27 for BOTH) so I could move my girlfriend's Dell Dimension 3000 desktop computer and her internet access to another room without either running cable to that room myself or paying Charter Cable to do it. I also wanted to set up wireless access, with file and printer sharing, to include her Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop (which was already equipped with a built-in wirless card). The "Basic" version of Network Magic came free with both the router and desktop adapter, along with a free 30-day trial of the "pro" version. The short version of the story is that D-Link's tech support was in the Phillipines, manned by people who would simply put me on hold while they tried to "look up" the answer somewhere, who had no real knowledge whatsoever, were totally worthless, and therefore couldn't help me with ANY of the installation problems! However, with all of the features of the Network Magic program, which helped me figure out and solve most of them by myself, along with ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING tech suppport from the Network Magic folks ("Jessica" was knowledgeable about seemingly everything, including the D-Link items, Windows XP, applicable Norton Internet Security issues, AND her Network Magic program), I believe this program will be well worth the ONE-TIME-CHARGE (not annual subscription) of $40 to upgrade my version to continue with "Pro" after the 30 day trial is over. She said their phone support continues to be free for as long as they support your version of the program, which is at least 2-3 years.

From my perspective, this program provides everything you could possibly want to very successfully manage, in a very user-friendly and easily visible way (like with their "Network Map), all of your network-connected hardware, files, etc. Just being able to easily share files from ANYWHERE where you have an internet connection (not just within your own network) is valuable, not to mention the ease of sharing a printer from anywhere in your home, whether that printer is connected wirelessly or hardwired to any network-connected computer on your system.

I see a lot of other very negative reviews, but perhaps Cisco has seen the error of their ways and fixed things as of now (12-08-09). Anyway, as of now, I am a VERY satisfied customer!!!!!

Updated on Dec 8, 2008

By the way, the version of Network Magic I am reviewing here is actually Version 4.9.8225.0-DLINK0routersetup, which is Pure Networks Platform Version 10.2.8216.0. This is apparently a version of the Network Magic Version 4.9 that is included specifically with D-Link products ("Jessica" said D-Link has told them they have experienced far fewer tech support requests since they started including this software with their products, WHICH I ABSOLUTELY BELIEVE FROM MY EXPERIENCE).

Updated on Dec 8, 2008

P.S. As a pertinent addition to those reviews wherein people are complainign about the cost of upgrading their previous versions of Network Magic (like 4.9) to Version 5.0, their website clearly states:

Network Magic 5.0 ยท 7-day free trial of Network Magic Pro

Easily connect your computers and devices to create your home network; allowing you to easily get connected to the Internet, share printers and files, protect your network from intruders, and monitor and control access to your network.

*****Existing customers: Network Magic 5.0 is a paid upgrade. If you install the Network Magic 5.0 Trial and decide not to purchase it, you will have to uninstall 5.0 and reinstall your previous version of Network Magic.*****

Although I added the asterisks, I still don't think you can get much clearer than that statement at the end. You can't really blame Cisco if you don't read that VERY PROMINENT note on their website, or expect them to make an exception for you.

"DISHONEST UPDATE STICK WITH V4.9 DON'T DOWNLOAD V5.0"

December 02, 2008  |  By honest-joe

 |  Version: Network Magic 5.0.8282.0

Pros

NONE over V4.9

Cons

Pro offers virtually no value over STD version, speed test is free from other sources.

Summary

Rip off. You download V5.0 after paying for V4.9 because they tell you to upgrade, then they tell you to pay $25 !!!!!!
Very Dishonest !!!!!!!!!!!
