"Good for its purpose"
Version: Netscape Communicator (32-bit Complete Install) 4.79
Summary
This is an old version of Netscape. If you expect it to compare to IE6, you will be mistaken. This is a good fit if you have an older computer. However, if you have a fairly recent computer get either netscape 7.1 or mozilla 1.4.

Summary
Netscape Netscape Netscape. I've been building websites a long time, and I've been reading all the other web developers comments here and they all pretty much say the same thing. Netscape 4 is a great browser no question, but in today's internet it stops you from experiencing the web to it's full potential. I just used version 4.8 to check hotmail, and it didn't display the log in cgi correctly, while every other browser on my sytem (Opera 7.11, IE 6, Netscape 7.1) have no problem with it. This kind of gross non-compliancy is just in-excusable. It just seems that anytime I want to do something interesting on one my websites Netscape 4 won't do it. Inline frames, Style sheets, sheesh it won't even display forms properly. I totally support having an alternative to Internet Explorer. I think it's the best browser, but if your not going to use Internet Explorer get Netscape 7. It handles CSS (style sheets) and inline frames and all that other stuff that all these web developers talk about better. I know it's slow. On my system as far as speed goes both Netscape 4 and Netscape 7 go at about the same speed. IE blazes past them. however if you simply must have something made by Netscape get 7. It pretty much let's you get as much out of the web as IE 6.

"Horrible, obsolete..."
Version: Netscape Communicator (32-bit Complete Install) 4.79
Summary
I've never been a fan of Netscape, but please, download the latest version (at the time of this writing-- 7) instead, because it can actually render pages correctly. It's a simple fact that any W3C standards-compliant website of any complexity will render incorrectly with this browser, mostly having to do with an almost complete lack of CSS support (VERY IMPORTANT). For anyone who thinks this browser is fine because their favorite sites still render correctly, it's likely that these favorite sites have implemented scripting to automatically detect this browser and automatically load a different page or style sheet that will actually render correctly. I'm a webmaster and don't provide as much, and who knows how long some of these sites will either.
