    "Sock puppet reviews?"

    September 21, 2006  |   By Steinhaus

    Version: NetShade 3.0.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
So who's responsible for writing these new glowing reviews? Rayner sock puppets? Just check out the reviews for NetShade2 and then ask yourself, "How could things have improved so dramatically so quickly?" The fact is nothing has changed at all. NetShade is the most pathetically supported product I have ever used. Even many shareware and freeware products are supported a whole lot better than this.

Ty is very selective about what emails he'll respond to. If it has to do with him getting paid he's Johnny-on-the-spot. Anything else though don't expect a reply AT ALL. It took me days to figure out why I couldn't connect to the NetShade Proxy and I had to do it all by myself because Ty will not respond to requests for tech support. And it doesn't matter if you use his online form or email him directly at ty@raynersoftware.com Either way just expect to be ignored.

Six emails and three days later and he finally replied and admitted he'd given me an invalid registration number. But even with the valid reg it still didn't work. After much fiddle farting around I isolated the problem to an apparent incompatibility with the Netshade Proxy and my firewall. Two weeks later and I'm still waiting for him to reply and tell me why I can't use a firewall with his proxy server when my firewall in over two years has never been incompatible with anything at all, including many other proxy servers both public and private.

Maybe there's some way of resolving this but if there is it won't be because Ty Rayner assists in any way. The message that Ty Rayner is sending is "Thanks for the money. Now have a nice life." Once he's got your money you're on your own. If you can get it working you're one of the lucky few. As far as I'm concerned having to take down my firewall is entirely unacceptable, and Ty's nonexistent support is even more unacceptable.

    I'm sticking with *** http://anon.inf.tu-dresden.de/index_en.html

*** is slower, but it works (no firewall issues) and it's even free. They also have a support forum. Not that I've ever needed it. It just works. But if you've got a problem you can get help pronto. I remember a few months back the *** network went down for a couple hours. They posted a notice about it within minutes and also let everyone know when it'd be back up. Very impressive. If Ty is too lazy to support his own product he should at least put up a forum where Netshade users can support one another.

If Ty would just have the decency to support his product this could be a great service and he could do really well financially. But without support, and considering all the problems you're likely to have it'd probably be a big mistake purchasing Netshade.

"Does just what it says! And NO PROBLEMS!"

    September 13, 2006  |   By thaiwest

    Version: NetShade 3.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Iâ??ve down-loaded version 3 and paid my up-grade fee. Launched it without problems.

When I had a misunderstanding regarding the use of it, I used the web form e-mail at the support site. Within about 3 hours I had a reply! And, hey, Iâ??m in Thailand... that meant someone was up in the middle of the night in America to provide support! Impressive!

It could use a bit better documentation... or explanation is more like it. And it would be great if it would shield the IP address when sending e-mail or using a chat client...

Get it. Use it! No one needs to know where you are or what IP you are entering the net with! Keep your privacy your own!

    Hope this helps.

"re: Works if you read the FAQ"

    July 17, 2006  |   By Frugalscot

    Version: NetShade 2.1.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Hey DerekBill, I really resent your statement. What you're inferring is:
1). NetShade was always non-intuitive, difficult to understand, etc, and the only way to figure it out is to read the FAQ.
2). I must be stupid because while it worked great for months, all of a sudden it crapped out and I'm too stupid to figure out that in order to make it work again all I need to do is read the FAQ.
3). I'm too lazy to read the FAQ and therefore I've never read it before, and if I'd just read it then everything would just be coming up roses again.

Maybe you don't mean to imply any of these things but that's what you've done. Your insinuation that all anyone needs to do is read the FAQ and they'll be up and running in no time is ludicrous and infers that people are too lazy to read an FAQ that takes all of 2 minutes to read, or too stupid to know how to read.

I never had to read the FAQ in the first place (although I did anyway) to figure out how to make it work. My complaint doesn't have anything to do with NetShade being a complex non-intuitive app, because it's actually quite easy to figure out. Furthermore the FAQ hasn't changed one iota in the months that I've owned it.

Furthermore you're covering for Rayner's pathetic excuse for support, which as far as I can tell is non-existent. I've sent them multiple emails (the only way they allow anyone to communicate with them) and I've never gotten a response.

"Works, if you read the FAQ"

    July 15, 2006  |   By DerekBill--2008

    Version: NetShade 2.1.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I had a lot of trouble with this software, or more specifically the Private Proxy function, until I read the documentation thoroughly. Checking back this past week, it seems like the FAQ is now a lot clearer. Now that it's set up correctly, it works wonderfully. I suspect the developer has put a little more effort of late into making ease of use a higher priority. In any event, I've gone from a very unhappy buyer to one who couldn't be happier.

What's the deal Rayner? I've emailed for support twice. Still no response and still your proxy server is down. Just what did I pay for anyway? This would be a great product, and I'd give it more stars... if it only worked!

This program works only with Safari, not Firefox or Mozilla. Basically, this makes the software obsolete and pretty useless.

    "A quality product"

A worthy update. Works as advertised and in a satisfyingly Mac-like way; set it and forget it. The addition of a dedicated proxy for registered users makes NetShade 2 good value for money compared to its previous incarnation.

Raynersoftware provides a very fast proxy for all the registered users. This makes surfing a breeze. I hope that the author will add more functionalities to his software.
