Editors' Review
You don't need to worry about giving your kid a smartphone, as long as it's got Net Nanny for Android. Like its Windows cousin, ContentWatch's app monitors user activity, blocks restricted sites and inappropriate content, and even limits which apps can run. Parents can administer devices and view reports on Net Nanny's Web console. Net Nanny for Android runs in Android 2.2 and up as well as Kindle Fire. It requires a Net Nanny account, but several subscription options are available, including a free 14-day trial.
Pros
Remote control: Parents or administrators can remotely configure and monitor Net Nanny-protected devices online.
Not just for parents: Employers can use Net Nanny to keep employees from abusing company-supplied phones, too.
User controls: Net Nanny for Android can block profanity or any inappropriate content and also limits access periods. Age-based profiles make configuration easier.
App Manager: The App Manager lets parents remotely monitor, block, and even uninstall apps on the device.
Cons
Dashboard wiped: A recent update enhanced Net Nanny's reporting but wiped existing Dashboard data, so you may want to back up any data you want to save.
Slower connections: Like most monitoring and filtering software, Net Nanny for Android can slow down data transfer speeds.
Bottom Line
If you thought your kids could get into trouble on their home PC, just wait until they start carrying smartphones. Fortunately, Net Nanny for Android puts powerful parental controls in your hands -- not theirs.
Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Net Nanny for Android 2.2.3.
