Editors' review

Nero BackItUp 2014 is a redesigned aid for backing up common files such as music, movies, photos, and documents.

Pros:

Multitask: BackItUp allows you to multitask and set new backup processes while current ones are running. For example, you can create custom images if you want to make discrete chunks of different backup files.

Device support: Nero BackItUp supports file backups from Android phones and tablets, with a unified design that spans all machines, including PCs. The universal design makes the experience consistent and easy on any platform.

Clear walkthrough: Nero walks you through the entire backup process, clearly delineating where you're saving your files and where they reside, using large images and minimal interfaces. Though the manual backup mode is available for free, any scheduled backups require a premium fee, which at the asking price is a low barrier to entry.

Cons:

More steps: The "2 step, 3 step" process is a bit misleading, as each step can require several clicks. However, it's good to see Nero taking active strides in walking users through the process. That process may not be intuitive for newbies, but it's not impossible.

Limited for savvy users: For many advanced users, Nero's BackItUp isn't a backup application in the traditional, full-on hard drive re-imaging sense. BackItUp is for simpler processes with individual files, documents, photos, and the like. If your hard drive dies, don't expect this app to restore your computer to an exact system state.

Final Verdict:

If you know how to use and save files to separate media like USB drives and discs, then most of what Nero offers in its core service might not be necessary. It's just as easy to drag and drop files onto a jump drive. But Nero has a long history of expertise in data backup tools that make a basic process a bit more robust, with the added benefits of encryption and automatic restorations. By taking the guesswork out of creating backups, combined with an intuitive user flow and clear design, BackItUp has something for everyone. The premium cloud services come at affordable prices, all the way up to an $8 monthly fee that promises unlimited data storage in the cloud. Heavy cloud users would probably get the most value from the premium service, but if you're no stranger to hard drive imaging and more traditional system restorations, then I'd recommend passing.

"Works Fine - What is all the hubbub?"

    August 13, 2014   |   By morrisjcmll

    Version: Nero BackItUp 2014 15.0.23

    Pros

In my experience, the software is working flawlessly. Initially there was a bandwidth issue but it has been corrected and you can continue to work while the program runs its backups.

    Cons

I wish there were a few more trivial wishlist items in the product. For example I would like to see folder and file sizes on the screen.

    Summary

I am a seasoned technology-oriented person and I continue to be amazed at how various folks view products. This product does what it is suppose to do and it does it well. I regret to disagree with those who feel otherwise. I would suggest that we may be returning to the days when "installs" should be done with Virus protection turned OFF. Perhaps some of the other folks problems could be due to not taking this step initially. Hope this helps.

    "Completely Dysfunctional and Therefore Worthless"

    May 20, 2014   |   By AlynAlyxWest

    Version: Nero BackItUp 2014 15.0.17

    Pros

Seems to have decent, simple, straightforward layout and interface.

    Cons

Doesn't work. Crashes every time with rhyme, reason, explanation, or link/suggestions to hunt down and fix whatever wrong, just a simple 'this program has stopped working, Windows will notify you when there's a solution'...which hasn't happened yet and is EXTREMELT frustrating and annoying considering all my files from years if my life that I need to access for an autobiographical documentary project somehow all got stored with .nco file extensions (I guess I used Nero in the past), but now I can access them to save my life because Nero's token product for doing so SIMPLY DOESN'T WORK AS IT IS INTENDED TO...NOT AT ALL...PERIOD. I can select files with the .nco extension and designate the folder I'd like to restore them to...but instead of restoring my files to a useable format as intended and claimed to do, it just crashes every time without restoring any successfully, and that's that...there's no recourse...just the "windows will notify you when there's a solution."

    Summary

Completely worthless and extremely frustrating waste of time in my case, also leaving me completely stranded and helpless in accessing the GIGS of extremely important and valuable content off these old hard drives b/c they're in the .nco format. HALP!!!

"Software is BAD! Unlimited storage space Okay!"

    April 15, 2014   |   By desparo

    Version: Nero BackItUp 2014 15.0.23

    Pros

This is gonna be really short list.

    Software:
-Is real easy to use and can be set to continuous mode. Not excuse for those who forget to backup.
-Software is free. (Yeah digging the bottom of the barrel for that positive note)
-You can use your browser to access your cloud service files directly without installing the software. Probably more useful for uploading for most. Definitely more useful for downloading. You can also share files through links. But if you want to do that a lot find some other site.

    Cloud Storage:
-The unlimited storage is nice but don't expect a lot of upload bandwidth to use it. It took me a month to backup my backup drive. This is my last resort solution if I lose every other backup.
-Free 5 gigs is okay. There are better offers out there but with easy software to use its probably good for your grand parents who want to save there pictures.

    Cons

With a 1,000 characters I can't list all my complaints.

-The software is BAD. And it is so basic that even other free programs make it look bad. If you don't have use for the large/cheap cloud service get DropBox or Box or anything else.

-Buggy. It spent 4 days doing a backup. 1/4 through it would stop and then the backup would reset and start again. So instead of 4 Gigs of files backed up I have 1 Gig backed up 4 times.

-This is literally as basic as it gets. 3 steps. Choose your folder(s)/Drives(s) to backup, where to backup (hd/disk/network/Cloud), and then when. You can't change anything else. You then get some feedback on how its going. And some rough guess on how long it will take.

-One of the most important features it lacks for me is some kind of error checking on the uploads. When I'm done I'm gonna have to download all the files to a spare hd then run a test on the files. This is where having a 2nd backup program that writes zip files comes in handy.

    Summary

Don't get this for the software. Personally I use Cobian backup to backup my important stuff to a backup computer then I use Nero backup to upload continuously to the cloud. If another program comes along that can do that same I'd erase Nero's version in a heart beat.

"I wish I read these reviews before I bought top package"

    March 30, 2014   |   By leo_bfg

    Version: Nero BackItUp 2014 15.0.23

    Pros

    - Simple user-friendly interface.
    - Unlimited cloud storage apparently so most cost-effective rate per Gb.

    Cons

    THIS SOFTWARE IS BROKEN!
    - Every backup to cloud fails from PC or Android mobile due to connection failure or battery too low - even when USB cable plugged in and battery level above 20% minimum threshold.
    - Even backups to PC over Wi-Fi fail due to battery level issue.
    - No "successful backup" confirmation - obviously developers not expecting it to work
    - Every backup is spirit crushingly slow.

    Summary

    Updated on Mar 30, 2014

Admitted I am trying to backup 300Gb from PC over ethernet cable and 20Gb from Android mobile.

    Correction:-
    - Unlimited cloud storage for top paid package.

"Don't waste your time; save yourself frustration."

    March 24, 2014   |   By JA_Torone_UK

    Version: Nero BackItUp 2014 15.0.23

    Pros

Very little. I did like the minimal, clean web design.

    Cons

Many. Very slow backups and restores. Confusing and inconsistent documentation. NO SUPPORT. I found an 800# but it cost $3.99 USD PER MINUTE and would not let me pass unless I entered my credit card info. The other support option was email. I confirmed their support is in Germany and their response is within 24 hours. Does not do me any good if I have a critical issue, does it? Furthermore, this product is unstable, has an inaccurate progress meter, and often sits there without telling what it is doing (or not doing). Poor performance and compatibility with Windows 8. ONLY 5GB!!! I'll stay with the free providers that offer that much and often more and are better, more reliable software.

    Summary

This is a very immature product from a legacy company that has not produced anything good in over 8 years. They completely missed it on this one. I am paying more for my backup solution but at least it is fast, reliable, encrypted, well documented, and has support readily available. This product looked good at first but after using it for a while, it is more problems than it is worth. At least I did not pay for this! I cannot imaging the paid product being any better.

    "DO NOT BUY"

    March 10, 2014   |   By InformedUser

    Version: Nero BackItUp 2014 15.0.23

    Pros

The main advantage here, and why I signed up, was the offer of unlimited backup across all my devices.

    Cons

TECH SUPPORT- is in Germany, via e-mail ONLY, so the replies are once a day. Each time they have replied, it is like my wife (they are nice, but have no tech knowledge whatsoever). INTERFACE- I am using Win7 -64 bit. The product feels like a BETA version: the backup has no pause or cancel button. Plus, the job stays on the list permanently (you cannot delete it). Then the old job you tried to cancel or delete reactivates itself and begins again. UPLOADS. My first job was for 140GB. It has been running continuously for two weeks, with another 20 days to go. To upload all my family computers will take six months at this rate. And it is not my ISP. When I asked NERO about this, they actually said I should backup fewer files. SYSTEM RESOURCES- when I first installed this, it consumed about 90% of my 8GB ram to run. I had to uninstall it and reinstall. I suspect this does not play well with Norton's firewall. but the tech support knows nothing about it.

    Summary

    Waste waste waste of money.

"I like Free Any Data Recovery software"

    February 20, 2014   |   By Christams

    Version: Nero BackItUp 2014 15.0.23

    Pros

It is better than this one. Free Any Data Recovery is the freeware tool to retrieve various files like documents, photos, multimedia files, emails, etc. from both computer and removable drives; it provides Normal scan and deep scan modes.

    I found it here: http://free-any-data-recovery.en.softonic.com/

    Cons

    Everything......................

"Seems like common-place review-fraud to me!"

    December 16, 2013   |   By MonicaRaymundFan

    Version: Nero BackItUp 2014 15.0.17

    Pros

None! Nero software sucks all-around, their software style, their software functionality, their software licensing strategy, their software quality, etc. etc. etc.... It all sucks...royally. They put no thought or care into anything they make or do.

    Cons

Everything! Nero software sucks all-around, their software style, their software functionality, their software licensing strategy, their software quality, etc. etc. etc.... It all sucks...royally. They put no thought or care into anything they make or do.

    Summary

There is some major review-fraud that may be unfolding here. E.g. Nero Pays CNET employee to post a realistic (seasoned with some real but very trivial negative critiques) review, that overall gives people a favorable opinion of Nero (mission accomplished, right?), and people buy and download their buggy (unbeknownst to them) product(s), and are doomed with contemptible, buggy, hideous, bloated, non-functioning software that just won't go away. Nero re-deposits some of the money people pay for their software to bribe CNET employees into posting more bogus reviews [to offset the real and very commonly negative reviews]! Nero Keeps getting money to stay in business. End of Story.
