Editors' Review

Nero 9 delivers a refurbished digital media suite that's still as comprehensive as they come, though now in a more polished wrapper. The installation file is massive and once Nero is on your machine, it consumes a hefty serving of memory. Considering all it can do, though, we can only complain so much.

CD- and DVD-burning are still Nero's core, while shortcuts for burning and ripping CDs and DVDs are now accessible from the new StartSmart GUI, now adorned with an RSS reader. Authoring and burning high-definition CDs and DVDs are added features, and so is the ability to export video files made and edited with Nero to YouTube, MySpace, and MyNero.

Nero 9 introduces RescueAgent, a tool to recover data from damaged disks, and a gaggle of Vista features, including a one-click desktop gadget for copying CDs.

Despite the cosmetic alterations, Vista support, and enhancements, particularly to Nero Vision, the dramatic changes are slim. However, Nero's significantly faster application launch time and improved usability make the audio, video, photo, data, and home entertainment workhorse that lets you edit MP3s, capture and edit video, record and playback TV, create slide shows, back up data, convert audio files, check your hardware specs, and design disc covers with ease well worth a try.

"CNET must be corrupt now."

June 26, 2009  |  By NeroSux

 |  Version: Nero 9 9.2.6.0

Pros

Nothing- this is one of the sorriest programs ever concocted. At least the trojans have a sense of honor about not deleting files from your PC.

Cons

Malware- deletes competing files without permission, including MSFT!

Summary

The fact CNET could give this 5 stars is very depressing- it means CNETis now corrupt. This is a huge loss for us. Nero 9 is criminal malware- it deletes the Windows standard DVD decoder without premission. It deliberately does not uninstall itself, so your registry cleaner cannot tell to remove its makleys. Nero deletes registry entries for competitors. IF you don't use RevoUninstaller the first time, it will take you over 5 hours to remove the 14,000 registry keys Nero inserts. Nero 9 is a criminal attempt to take over your PC, hoping you will just give up and let it happen. CNET are a disgrace to lie about this here.

Updated on Jun 26, 2009

CNET are liars- they did not use the program,. It is also slow and does not install properly on Vista without multiple patches. Nero's Auto-Updater also re-steals your file associations once you've taken the hours to reset them to proper values. Nero also invented a new file association that belonged to Nikon and disables Nikon images on your PC. It's just disgraceful for CNET to lie like this.

"Wish you could give it a zero rating"

May 03, 2009  |  By ballssalty

 |  Version: Nero 9 9.2.6.0

Pros

None at all

Cons

This software takes over all file associations without asking permission. Ownership has already acknowledged how they screwed up big time with this release. http://*******/wp6bz that was over 3 months ago and still no update to Nero 9 to fix problems

Summary

Bottom line, avoid Nero 9. No software should ever take over file associations without permission. That is the behavior of a virus. I have no idea how this thing got 5 stars from CNET. Clearly they don't actually use the product and just read a PR release about features. So I would avoid CNET Editor reviews as well.

"Version 9 IS Not The Best Program On Vista"

February 28, 2009  |  By mai000153

 |  Version: Nero 9 9.2.6.0

Pros

Enjoyed using past versions of Nero for the quick cd burning. Versions 7 and 8 are in my opinion are better.

Cons

Nero 9.0 crashed my Vista os. Had to reinstall to factory settings because Windows would not boot normally nor boot with command prompt in safe mode.

Summary

It's worth using on Windows XP perhaps not Vista.

 |  Version: Nero 9 9.2.6.0

Pros

new features but a controlling program

Cons

Slow and controlling-Rewrites other programs without permission-Hard to get Rid of.

Summary

When we buy a specific software -We want just that -Not for it to take over other programs without asking-A person gave it five stars-Reality check--Some people like making comments even when theyve never tried the product. C-net gave it five stars so I bought it-I dont reccomend it all....When it goes on sale for half off-Save your money-I have a brand new nero 7 somewhere in my room -I need to find and install the program--Hope this helps

"Nero ultra 7 is much more dependable"

February 20, 2009  |  By tashbarry

 |  Version: Nero 9 9.2.6.0

Pros

I like the fact that there are plug ins for this version as I like the Move it plug in

Cons

software is much too intrusive in my registry and other files that I would rather be left to me to change, I think it should be reworked I will not use it for the security factor alone

"Only 5x reinstalls allowed -- DON'T BUY IT!"

February 20, 2009  |  By SandyK2009

 |  Version: Nero 9 9.2.6.0

Pros

None, period.

Cons

1. Only 5 reinstalls, period. After the 5th reinstall you won't be able to use it again.
2. Invasively takes over file associations, even relabeling SYSTEM FILES to play within the Showtime player
3. Nagware that accuses you of stealing.

Summary

This is software to avoid at all costs. Save your time and your wallet from both being ripped off.

"Originally I wrote a NASTY review"

February 18, 2009  |  By pappyjoe7

 |  Version: Nero 9 9.2.6.0

Pros

IIt took a long time to learn my way around the program , but I'm glad I took the time

Cons

The only cons I find is so many segments that I will never use

Summary

I took my time to learn Nero 9 and have completely changed my opinion on it. I use it mostly for video capturing and love that it records in AC3 5.1. Using their tutorials to learn how to use it I find it an excellent product. Since I gave it a fair chance I haven't had a bad burn with either video or audio and I find the video capturing superior to any other product I've used
