CNET Editors' review
Nero 9 delivers a refurbished digital media suite that's still as comprehensive as they come, though now in a more polished wrapper. The installation file is massive and once Nero is on your machine, it consumes a hefty serving of memory. Considering all it can do, though, we can only complain so much.
CD- and DVD-burning are still Nero's core, while shortcuts for burning and ripping CDs and DVDs are now accessible from the new StartSmart GUI, now adorned with an RSS reader. Authoring and burning high-definition CDs and DVDs are added features, and so is the ability to export video files made and edited with Nero to YouTube, MySpace, and MyNero.
Nero 9 introduces RescueAgent, a tool to recover data from damaged disks, and a gaggle of Vista features, including a one-click desktop gadget for copying CDs.
Despite the cosmetic alterations, Vista support, and enhancements, particularly to Nero Vision, the dramatic changes are slim. However, Nero's significantly faster application launch time and improved usability make the audio, video, photo, data, and home entertainment workhorse that lets you edit MP3s, capture and edit video, record and playback TV, create slide shows, back up data, convert audio files, check your hardware specs, and design disc covers with ease well worth a try.

"Piece of Crap."
Version: Nero 9 9.0.9.4c
Pros
There are no pros. I wish I could give a 0 star rating.
Cons
Why even bother giving it away? It's bloated, worthless nagware. IMO, Nero 6 was the last good product Nero released.
Summary
Avoid it.

Version: Nero 9 9.0.9.4c
Pros
None really. The showtime module is an improvement but it is not possible to install it on its own
Cons
Nero products have got worse release by release Nero 9 takes over an hour to install and in most case fails. There are thousands of complaints about found by a simple Google search
Summary
Avoid it like the plague becuase even it you can install it it is no better than version 8 but most likely it will corrrupt your PC and you will need to restore your system from backup.

"COMPLETE GARBAGE! The WORST product I have EVER used!"
Version: Nero 9 9.0.9.4c
Pros
There aren't NONE!!! Oh yeah I have a positive comment. I'm going back to Nero 7 premium edition
Cons
There are so many HORRIBLE issues with nero 9, I dont know where to start. Long installation, stupid interface, buggy applications, etc.....
Summary
Whoever is reading this review do not, I REPEAT DO NOT install this program. Save your money on a better media creation program. You will save yourself so much time and have less headaches.
Whomever the software engineers are, they should be all be FIRED!!!
Bottom-line, Nero dropped the ball on what use to be the best CD/DVD media application. NERO what the f***??? I use to be NERO fanboy but now I will definitely never use a new Nero product ever again. Good job idiots!!
It was a great relief when I un-installed this bull**** program but even the un-install took longer than the actual installation time. -
"Even Norton is less bloated than Nero"
Version: Nero 9 9.0.9.4c
Pros
AVC HD support
Nero Live is nice (but so is Media Center)
Finally supports QuickTime formatCons
All the rest of the apps are bloated as hell.
Takes forever to install (yeah even longer than Vista SP1 on Vista Gold)
Nero apparently has yet to learn how to write managed code...this is the first version that requires .NET and is shockingly slow.Summary
Avoid it like plague. Version 6 was the last good version but for some niceties like Vista/Windows 7 support, Blu-ray, Nero 7 was tolerable. I decided never to try Nero after Nero 8 and its spinning donut but still decided to give Nero 9 a try. It's not even a suite anymore, it's a bloated operating system that installs inside of Windows and tries to take over Windows. Every new version sees a redesign of UI and StartSmart, plugin support is pulled from version 9. Buffer underruns may occur because Burning ROM is so f**king bloated slow. No shortage of useless apps. It just won't stay at being bloated, it'll slow down Windows and make it unstable as well.

"No "zero star rating" available."
Version: Nero 9 9.0.9.4c
Pros
none This program is worthless
Cons
Too complex, too much of a resource hog, too slow loading anyone of the programs.
Summary
This is a complete waste of time. The full version is not only no better, its even worse. Nero has been crap since version 6. What a shame as they have continued a downward spiral ...

"Bloated resource hungry filled with unnecessary BS"
Version: Nero 9 9.0.9.4c
Pros
It does what it is supposed to do, and does it well. Plus a lot of things you really don't want it to do or need, or want, or expect. It's definitely not junky, just way overboard.
Cons
huge - Huge - HUGE installation and drain on resources, ridiculous extras (though you can opt out of some) and the Nero 9 to Nero 9 update was not free? Tried to D/L it but wanted my credit card details, email what I had for breakfast etc. etc.
Summary
WOW. I thought Adobe was the most painfully bloated common software on the market. I WAS WRONG. This is absolutely ridiculous. Nero 8 Was not too bad, but the Nero people have decided to make installation, accessories and background running applicationsso hungry and time consuming AND COSTLY. Makes about as much sense s using the QE2 to go fishing in a puddle. I have since uninstalled this BS and gone with a more practical couple of free burning software programs that incorporates almost all of Nero's capabilities at a fraction of the resources and time. Most sensible people have their own preferred programs to listen and watch media with and, like windows media player, never use these limited oversized under-capable monstrosities. Can't fault the overall burning quallity but NERO ABSOLUTELY HAS LOST THE PLOT.

"Waste of money"
Version: Nero 9 9.0.9.4c
Pros
Actually, it can burn disc.
Cons
Everything else.
Summary
Few cons more:
- Installation time. High-end PC and only disc burning components installed nearly 1 hour.
- Bugs. Asks for registration again, again and again. No matter what you do.
- Bloated, why there is photo editing software included?
- Really confusing design when comparing to Nero 7.
- Loading, loading and more loading. It's so slow!
- Installation time. Really, how can it take more time than Vista?
- Upgrade and uninstall. Nero Clean Tool is even crappier. -
