Nero 8 Ultra delivers a refurbished digital media suite that's still as comprehensive as they come, though now in a more polished wrapper. The installation file is massive; also, once Nero is on your machine, it consumes a hefty serving of memory. Considering all it can do, though, we can only complain so much.
CD- and DVD-burning is still Nero's core; welcome shortcuts for burning and ripping CDs and DVDs are now accessible from the new StartSmart GUI, which is now adorned with a programmable RSS reader. Authoring and burning high-definition CDs and DVDs are added features, and so is the ability to export video files made and edited with Nero to YouTube, MySpace, and MyNero.
Nero 8 Ultra introduces RescueAgent, a tool to recover data from damaged disks, and a gaggle of Vista features, including a one-click desktop gadget for copying CDs.
Despite the cosmetic alterations, Vista support, and enhancements, particularly to Nero Vision, the dramatic changes are slim. However, Nero Ultra 8's significantly faster application launch time and improved usability make the audio, video, photo, data, and home entertainment workhorse that lets you edit MP3s, capture and edit video, record and playback TV, create slide shows, back up data, convert audio files, check your hardware specs, and design disc covers with ease well worth a try.

Version: Nero 8 Ultra Edition 8.1.1.4
Pros: Nero has a little bit of everything you could need such as a mixer for recording audio, video editor, picture editor, great backup service, converter for audio files, etc. By doing this, Nero could almost be your only multimedia program and would be just fine.
Cons: However, Nero has there hands in all the genres of multimedia but it spreads it's features out over all of it's programs instead of being in depth within any particular area. That is way I must give it a 4.

Version: Nero 8 Ultra Edition 8.1.1.4
Pros: The software does a good job in recording my DVR-MS (Windows MCE) files to DVD and for backing up my DVD movies (after taking the encryption out by third party software). For saving space I find Nero Digital to be a good alternative for storing movies (besides my DVD Backups created with Nero as well)
Nero Express is great for simple projects, like burning recoded DVDs, music (on DVD-RWs) or to copy DVDs. I use this software in conjunction with Alcohol 120% to make quick copies and images of saved projects.
The WaveEditor is an interesting tool to cut MP3, you can get free tools around but it is good to have it all together.
The Nero PhotoSnap is quite useful to crop and reduce pictures. Nero Vision doesn't crash as often as in Nero 7.
I haven't have the chance to play with Nero SoundTrax, CoverDesigner or Nero BackItUp but I don't feel comfortable in trusting Nero to do my computer backups on DVDs
Seems to have more compatibility with Windows Vista
Cons: The update from earlier versions of Nero are a total nightmare because they don't tell you you must run FIRST the Nero Cleantool that is available in some dark link in Nero Website. Like a1nosepicker I did the update just to find our my computer was freezing and none of my USB sticks and DVD trays worked properly. After uninstalling with Nero CleanTool, removing the folder "Ahead" from c:\program files\common files and cleaning the registry with ccleaner I was able to make it work.
If you want to make the program less intrusive, do not install the Weather Channel or the Ask toolbars. At the end of the setup do not allow the program to open ANY of your files unless you have a master degree in how to use Nero Ultra.
When you go to the download section in Nero. I was surprised to find out the "Trial and Software Updates" are exactly the same. When doing the installation, Nero try to use a demo license even tough I have a valid license key. After removing the demo from the setup menu, I have been asked several times why I am using a duplicated key. I just said reinstallation and everything goes well but still is quite annoying.
Using this software is very confusing and sometimes makes me want to throw my PC outside the window. Nero Home and Nero MediaHome I never got it working because my USB tuner is not recognized and my computer crash. Nero Burning Rom I haven't used it since version 6 because I believe you can do almost the same with Nero Express, Vision and Recode.
Nero Vision I used mostly for DVRS-MS but I don't know what they were smoking when they decided just to leave a single miserable 2D template to create the DVD menu. At least the 3D template doesn't crash as often as it used to do in Nero 7.
Nero has the tendency to corrupt DVDs if you try to burn more than two in a row. I have learned my lesson and after burning two DVDs I just reboot my computer. I cannot imagine doing backups with Neto BackItUp just to find out that after two DVDs the backup gets corrupted.
