Editors' review

MyPublisher's BookMaker is a free photo album maker with a twist: You use it to create, organize, and edit your photo album, and then order online one of several printed photobook options at various prices, which are custom-printed and shipped to you. The choices range from paperback PocketBooks editions costing 10 bucks to coffee-table-style hardcover books that are three times more expensive, as well as calendars, postcards, and greeting cards. While we didn't go so far as to purchase any of them, the examples displayed on MyPublisher's Web site appear attractive and well-made and offer an alternative to traditional prints at a comparable cost.

Opening BookMaker's interface includes a Quick-Start Guide in the left-hand panel but also initiates an optional but helpful quick-start video. There's also a full Help menu that includes links to chat and Web-based assistance. The wizard-based guide walks you through each step of creating your book. Clicking an image calls up an Image Toolbox that allows various adjustments. We really like the custom book-jacket-maker feature, which you can use to replace a lost or damaged jacket or create your own custom book covers.

BookMaker is freeware certified for Windows versions up to Vista, but we installed in Windows 7 with no trouble. It installs desktop icons without asking and leaves items behind when it's uninstalled but is otherwise a polite performer. It's an interesting concept in publishing that can present your photos in hardbound albums and other printed formats for prices similar to blank albums in a bookstore.

"By far the worst company I have ever encountered!"

    February 24, 2013   |   By FrankAtGmail

    Version: MyPublisher BookMaker 4.0

    Pros

    You joke, surely!

    Cons

I am at a loss to understand how a company that must do a lot of business can be this bad. I have to believe that the issue with MyPublisher is a wholly endemic one, not just a question of a bad customer service department.

    Summary

I wish I had thought to read online reviews before I got involved with MyPublisher, I would have saved myself a lot of aggravation and the worst customer service/company I can remember ever dealing with!
MyPublisher does not deserve to stay alive as a company and it is my sincere hope that this review will aid in their eventual demise. I do not say this lightly or with undue malice. I just feel that customers deserve more respect and consideration than I received from this company.
My problems began 3 weeks ago when I ordered the latest edition of a book I made about 2 years ago. MyPublisher had printed this same book for me 3 times in the past 2 years and the quality was really good overall. Each time I printed a new edition of the book, I added a few more pages to what I already had. Three weeks ago I did the same thing - added a few more pages to the same book I started 2 years before and had printed 3 times before, then I uploaded my new edition to MyPublisher. When I received the 10 copies back (at the cost of nearly $300!) I was dismayed to find that all of the pictures in the book - both the prior ones and the few new ones added to the current edition - were printed so dark as to render the book useless. The pictures where not a little dark, they were very dark and reddish - just plain bad!
At the time I felt that the only negative was that I would miss my deadline for delivering the books but these things happen sometimes and can't be helped. I thought that all I needed to do was call MyPublisher, explain the situation and they will simply reprint the books correctly and rush them to me. That is not at all how it went.
After not being able to reach them by phone, I decided to send an email to customer service explaining my issue. The reply I got back was pretty straightforward in its message: Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately we are not responsible for the design of your book and we never alter customer designs before printing them. If you don't like your book, too bad.
I thought surely they must have misunderstood my explanation, especially the part that explains that the book is exactly the same book with the same exact pictures they have printed correctly 3 times before, with just a few new pages added. Surely something went wrong with the physical printing to make ALL the pictures come out consistently dark, some being almost totally black. I reasoned to myself that this was a simple thing to understand - because it happens. I wrote back and got the same response: We are a young and dynamic company; we do great work and value your input and will strive to do better for our customers. As for you, though, your book is bad because you screwed up the design. We are not responsible so no reprint and absolutely no refund.
At this point I got mad. It was clear I was not going to get any consideration from MyPublisher and if I wanted my money back, I needed to get aggressive and refuse any nonsense. The next 2 weeks turned into a daily back-and-forth series of increasingly angry emails - me asking for my money back and MyPublisher standing firm to their intent to make me go away. I called American Express and explained the situation to them; they put my payment on hold and contacted MyPublisher.
This review will get way too long if I wrote the extent of my horrible experience and communications with this company. I did get to the point where I was copying every email address of individuals at the company to make sure more people, not just customer service and the returns department where aware of my situation. I believe the CEO's email address is Carl@MyPublisher.com. I was guessing at the email addresses based on the email address of my primary contact (firstName@MyPublisher.com). In the end, likely because of American Express getting involved, I received an offer to reprint the 10 books free of charge - but I had to lighten all of the pictures; I refused on the grounds that the pictures are fine as they have printed the exact same pictures correctly 3 times before. Besides, I'm sure they would have blamed me when the reprints came out way too light! The following day, 3 weeks after this began, I abruptly got a full refund.
I am at a loss to understand how a company that must do a lot of business can be this bad to a customer, especially one that has been with them for a while and never made a single complaint. And when I did complain, I thought that my reason was perfectly understandable. Throughout all of this they consistently insisted that I caused the problem but never said how that can possibly be the case. For my part, I even offered multiple times to send them a physical copy of the last edition of the book they printed correctly, and a copy of the new one so they can see what I am saying. They never acknowledged that offer. How can a company risk their reputation for less than $300 retail -- in this age of online reviews that never go away? All things considered, I have to believe that the issue with MyPublisher is a wholly endemic one, not just a question of a bad customer service department.
    Never again.

    "Customer service is the WORST!!!!"

    December 18, 2012   |   By grailmama

    Version: MyPublisher BookMaker 4.0

    Pros

Looks good when it is right.

    Cons

Near impossible to reach a customer service rep if there is a problem with your order.

    Summary

I have used MyPublisher for a few years with good results. However, this year there was a problem with my books. I have tried emailing a couple of times, held on the phone for 52 minutes waiting for a rep (eventually hung up), waited 3 hours on chat for a rep who connected and didn't respond then ended the chat session, spoke out on Facebook (all my comments were deleted), sent a private message...all to no avail. I am obviously not the only person with this problem because their Facebook page is barraged with similar complaints (all which are deleted within minutes of going up). They claim they guarantee their work and strive for "happiness." Serious joke. I will never order from this company again.

"Horrible. Can't find it to unstall it.Help!"

    December 09, 2012   |   By CherylMASS

    Version: MyPublisher BookMaker 4.0

    Pros

    None.
In this case Free is not a good thing.

    Cons

    Says it's here: "C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPublisher\MyPublisher\MyPublisher40.exe"
But doesn't show up in the program listings when I go to my Uninstall Programs.
Those of you who have uninstalled it, I'd appreciate hearing how you got it done. Thanks! I'll check back.

    Summary

I've done searches and have found others who ran into the same uninstall issue with no resolution.
I've tweeted, Facebooked, emailed and called customer service so far with no response to any of my communications.
    Stick with Snapfish or Shutterfly.

    "DO NOT USE THEM."

    July 04, 2012   |   By chillhill

    Version: MyPublisher BookMaker 4.0

    Pros

The software is easy enough to use. Until you try to connect to their server.

    Cons

I had all kinds of issues connecting and the customer service department is rubbish, either via phone or email. They seem very friendly but they don't have a clue, insisting it was a problem on my end and telling me over and over to delete the plist file, which I did about a hundred times but it never made a difference.

Next, when I finally got the book uploaded, without having clicked "back" or any other such nonsense, the company charged me THREE TIMES for a total of over $300, and now I'm waiting for them to reverse the holds on my bank account for these ridiculous amount. They don't explain why it happened, they just apologise and dither and don't do anything, and have told me to contact my bank.

I've literally lost about 4 days to this stupid programme that a friend suggested I use to print wedding photo books for my family. Going back to iPhoto. They're just as pricey, but I've never had a technical or charge issue with them. Do yourself a favour - stay away from this company!

    "Bad software engineering"

    December 16, 2011   |   By Lechroy

    Version: MyPublisher BookMaker 4.0

    Pros

Had one good calendar. Decent print quality and good paper. Overall I was satisfied with my first experience in software version 6.0.

    Cons

Mid December before Christmas, the program - version 7, crashed on me. I have lost everything and not recovered any work. What a shame to release an unstable program. They've lost my business unless I get some serious reimbursement.
System is Windows 7, Core i7 processor, update to date with all software and virusware.

    Summary

Not recommended with glitchy software. Could be a HUGE waste of time.

    "Unreliable backup-bad service"

    October 23, 2011   |   By loriwaukee

    Version: MyPublisher BookMaker 4.0

    Pros

I made one photobook that turned out quite nice.

    Cons

Lost my photobook due to a computer crash. I had backed it up per MyPublisher's instructions but the backup did not work. I also had a backup of my entire hard drive and so tried to recover the data that way, but it did not work. Called MyPublisher and they said that's b/c data is actually stored in the program (which I had reinstalled) and there was nothing I could do about it. I told them that I had done a similar recovery in past but couldn't remember how I did it, so they said someone would call me back to help me figure it out. No one did. I could probably eventually figure out how to recover the book, but really don't want to give them my business anymore. Am going to try Blurb.

    Summary

Photo book was nice. The manual backup recommended by MyPublisher is unreliable and there is no easy way to recover books even when you have your entire computer back up. Bad customer service.

"Terrible customer service, low quality photos"

    October 19, 2011   |   By mishy2150

    Version: MyPublisher BookMaker 4.0

    Pros

Nothing. I will never recommend this company to anyone. In fact, I will be sure to tell everyone NOT to use this company.

    Cons

Program does not tell you when the photos are going to be low quality every time. Certain photos were much lower quality than expected from my view on the computer but were not flagged as such by the program used to create the book. When I sent them back with my concerns they said there was nothing they could do about it even though it was a flaw in their software program or printing. There was a somewhat satisfactory fix for my issue that they suggested I could purchase (for about $10) instead of them offering to comp the cost of the fix. Since it was THEIR company/software that caused the flaw this was not a satisfactory solution.

    "Terrible customer service and reproducibility"

    July 22, 2011   |   By nancykerner

    Version: MyPublisher BookMaker 4.0

    Pros

    Absolutely none

    Cons

Order one of the deluxe books for a lot of $$$ and very poor quality. They blame the customer, but when asked a question as to why the same submitted photos from another order are so different they will just give you the run around.

    Summary

I absolutely will not order from this company again. I just order one of their deluxe photobooks and half the photos are either too red or too dark. When I called customer service they said to take a photo of some of the pictures and email them back to MyPublisher for review. My Publisher emailed back to say it is not their error. My high end monitor is calibrated regularly, I recently submitted color prints to a printing company for calibration check..which they compared to very close PLUS some of these same files were sent from another book I had previousely ordered from MY Publsiher ...and they do not even match each other! Extremely dissatisfied with their product and customer service!
For those who think they are so great...just wait..I thought they had a good product before this happened..but sooner or later when you order another book you THEN find out how worhless their customer service and guarantee is. Try ADORAMA instead!
