    "Good, but could be better"

    July 1, 2013  |   By Grampy0729

Version: Muvizu 3D November 2010 Beta release

    Pros

Fairly good selection of objects and characters to choose from.
Extensive set of tutorials on many subjects.
    Online forum available.
    Attractive output.

    Cons

    Learning curve is quite high.
Character movement controls sometimes blocked by the character.
Mouse controls not intuitive, difficult to get used to.
Limited interaction between characters and objects.
Needs to be a way to tweak path animation details.

    Summary

Overall it's a nice program, but be prepared to struggle with the interface quite a lot before you get the hang of it. I have been working with it for several days and still can't get the camera and character movements the way I want. Tutorials make it look simple, but it isn't that easy. Still the best free animation program I've found so far.

"The easiest way to make quality 3D animation"

    May 9, 2011  |   By wetdog2

Version: Muvizu 3D November 2010 Beta release

    Pros

Relatively easy to use considering the quality of the finished product
A wide option of character movements and gestures
A sizable library of characters and objects
    Great tutorials
    Lots of export options
    Great lighting options
    Free!

    Cons

Somewhat of a steep learning curve
Camera moves are hard to control
Despite the large amount of gestures and movements, you will want more
A couple bugs here and there.

    Summary

This is an amazing piece of software considering that it is free. It is based on a FPS gaming engine and so many of the controls (WASD for movement) are familiar. That said, there is a steep learning curve as the way the animation happens is pretty unique. A background in video editing helps, as does a knowledge of basic filmmaking.

In essence, you create a set and place characters within them then add dialogue and sound. Muvizu automatically syncs the dialogue to the characters. At that point, you direct a number of passes through the timeline. Each pass controls a different aspect of animation.

For instance, you make one pass where you control a character's eye movements. Another for his head movements. Another for his gestures and poses, etc. Then you do the same for camera cuts and movements. You can move the camera as you would in real life but the more complex the move, the harder it is to control. But for many of the features, you can move and tweaks them in the timeline afterwards to get the timing spot on.

The software comes prepackaged with a sizable set of characters, backdrops and objects. If you're adept at these things, you can also import in your own objects from a modeling program. They have extensive tutorials on YouTube, too.

You can also import JPGs and PNGs for use as backdrops or to put on a character's clothing. With some time and creativity, you can create elaborate sets. In the end, though, everything will have a distinct cartoonish feel to it and you'll start to see familiar gestures and characters repeated from movie to movie, but the Muvizu team consistently brings out new version of the software with larger libraries of characters and objects. Who knows how they're making money off this thing?

Once you are finished with your movie, you can import the rendered file into any movie editor for further effects and titles.

All in all, this is a very fun piece of software that allows you to create sophisticated animations very quickly. It helps to have a fast computer with a good video card as it eats up a lot of processor capacity. The end results, while HD, have that machinima look and will never be mistaken for a professional piece, but it's still a powerful animation tool. Easily the most sophisticated piece of free animation software out there.

"A promising adventure into desktop movie-making."

    December 20, 2010  |   By fuinfuin

Version: Muvizu 3D November 2010 Beta release

    Pros

I like the continuous flow of animation. Even when idling, the character is still alive and breathing. For a developing piece of software, I also like the variety of character outfits, and props. Variety is key here.

    Cons

The characters don't seem to be able to interact with their environment much, except for the Musical Instruments. I also notice they can't set the instruments down once they have them.

    Summary

Overall this is a great piece of software, the camera movement is a bit tricky without numerical coordinates one could enter, but once they get more variety in animation interaction and themes Muvizu will be unmatched.
