Version: MozyHome Remote Backup 1.14.0.6
"Mozy has me in fear of losing all my data."
Pros: I can't think of to many. Get an on-site backup unless you need to restore a few files quickly.
Cons: See below for more details.
Summary: Mozy takes forever to backup everything. It's a resource hog the whole time. Sometimes it starts to backup folders that you don't want it to. There's no way to remove files after they get there. You can't download at your maximum speed. If you have download speed like me (45Mb per sec minimum), you should be able to download all of your restore files in under 8 hours for about 200GB. Unfortunately Mozy throttles the speed of each individual file so that amount of data took me almost a week to download. With each file averaging about 3GB split up (that's what they do). Because of the download throttling the possibility that the file become broken is very high. Mozy uses an arbitrary numbering system that's hard to keep track off. I had to keep a spreadsheet open to make sure that I'd gotten all the files, and that they were the correct size. A sequential numbering system would save end users a lot of work. Unwisely on my part, I opted to use my own encryption key. After I had downloaded all of the files I used the decryption utility that is provided by Mozy. I used the wrong encryption key, and it zeroed out every encrypted file that I'd downloaded. That means that I'll have to wait another week to see if any of this works. After that, I restored a file that I had placed in my trash bin, and used a stored key file. The same resulted occurred. As I'm writing this Mozy is compiling the restore again, but at this point, I'm not holding out a lot of hope that I'll ever see my files again. Use Mozy with great caution. It might burn you bad. You won't great back large amounts of data without great struggle. Get an external backup as your second option. Mozy should be your distant last option. Learn from my mistakes.
