    "Used Thunderbird for several years"

    September 17, 2013  |   By mjnelson99

    Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.8

    Pros

I have used Thunderbird for a number of years. Mostly, it just worked, with multiple email addresses, too.!!!

Do remember to use Compact before creating backups.

If you haven't discovered Mozbackup, get it now. Can be invaluable for backup & restores. I usually backup nightly.

Just downloaded beta 3 of TB 24. Can hardly wait to test it out.

    Cons

I did have problems displaying html images in messages at one point. This was about TB 17.5 or so. Not sure now. I had also installed IE 10 into Win 7 X64, Home Premium. Not sure if it was TB itself or IE 10.

I went back to TB 17.3 and uninstalled IE 10 which took me back to IE 9.

Since doing that, html images are displaying correctly almost all the time with few exceptions having only place markers.

    Summary

Some people have lost their email messages using Thunderbird. By using Mozbackup regularly, only the very latest messages will be lost.

"This has been satisfactory for me."

    September 4, 2013  |   By jsr1937also

    Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.8

    Pros

I am downloading from several Roadrunner accounts. I am using Windows 7 on an HP quad processor. I haven't tried to load from yahoo though.

    Cons

I had to redo all my filters and folders when I updated to 17.0.8

    Summary

This has been pretty good for me, Used with WIN 98, WIN XP, WIN 7

    Updated on Sep 4, 2013

Try disabling the firewall and try. You may actually have 2 firewalls enabled. I use ZONE ALARM and Security, disabled WINDOWS firewall.

    Updated on Sep 11, 2013

I have recently loaded Mozilla Thunderbird Portable to a 16GB USB drive. I used a previous version on a 256MB Cruzer USB. I have had some problems over the years that had to be worked out, usually going to a forum or the Mozilla website. It is the only App I've found that will retrieve all my email when I travel.

    "Don't waste your time"

    September 3, 2013  |   By HeadMoose

    Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.8

    Pros

Looks the same as previous version, and the add-ins seem to work

    Cons

Email can be received but NOT sent. Previous versions worked just fine, current one does not, even when the settings are verified step-by-step.

    Summary

    Crippled and essentially useless!

    "Better than most, but"

    August 11, 2013  |   By CrappyJack

    Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.8

    Pros

It works with Yahoo, which is now a royal PIA to use. Most email handlers do not.

It allows me to handle all of my email accounts in one place.

    Cons

The Address Book really, really sucks! It used to be better before the last release.

You cannot import from other email accounts conveniently.
Importing contact list for Outlook is next to impossible because you can't edit columns in Thunderbird.
I see no way to merge various address books together.
Almost everything ever put on the internet about this program is now incorrect with the latest release.

It is not "business" friendly at all.

    Summary

If you are unfortunate enough to have a Yahoo email account (I've had mine over 30 years with the same email address) you are pretty much stuck with this program if you don't want to change email providers.

I think the earlier versions were actually more user friendly in practical applications. Whoever took over this project, IMHO, really screwed it up.

    Updated on Aug 15, 2013

Help files or documentation is nonexistent. It's as if the product never existed prior to this release. Searches that should return dozens of returns, return nothing.

This product is not ready for prime time. Big disappointment when compared to other Mozilla products.

    Updated on Aug 17, 2013

Here are a few of the shortfalls of this software.

    1. No ability to select which email account you are sending email from without actually changing to that account.

    2. You can have an emotioncon, but you can't highlight text.

    3. You do not have the option of deleting emails from your computer while leaving a copy on the server. You delete and Thunderbird deletes EVERYTHING.

    4. No ability to merge and manage address books from different email accounts.

    "I Love Thunderbird, BUT"

    August 9, 2013  |   By run4bear

    Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.8

    Pros

Not many improvements and several glitches.

    Cons

I am SUCK TO DEATH of them shoving every little "so-called improvement" at me. I daresay not much testing could be remotely possible as often the "updates" cause more problems. Take me back a few years when Thunderbird worked just fine.

    Summary

New and Improved is rarely the case with updates on Thunderbird. It must take a dozen "upgrades" to fix what was ruined by the previous. I'm going WAY back. I can manage my mail without the glitches and errors.

    Cons

    moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Thunderbird is permitted to access the Web. TRY AGAIN
when i hit SEND, i get: Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.comcast.net failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact the server administrator.

    "Even Better Than Outlook!"

    June 22, 2013  |   By MrWebAuthor

    Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.6

    Pros

It seems I'm only reviewing the software I really like, so the next time I come across something really lame, I'll do my best to scurry on over here to CNET and make a commentary. --- Okay, as for this "Thunderbird"...Outstanding would be the best word for it! I have multiple email accounts via different providers, and each email has it's own distinct purpose. Not all of them are POP mail accounts, so I'm not able to run all of them through Thunderbird; however, I am able to retrieve and interact with 5 of them, and that saves me a lot of time, energy and bandwidth having to log into each specific site just to check email. Just like Mozilla's Firefox browser utilizes Add-ons for extra features, so also it is with Thunderbird. These are great: I have the Google calendar and Sync add-on, so my wife and I are able to sync our calendars with each other and all our kids making it easy to keep up with each other.

    Cons

So far, as of yet, I haven't found one.

    Summary

I've used Microsoft Outlook for years to manage my email and appointment calendar, but the time has come to face reality...my 2003 Office suite is outdated. Whenever I need tech support and go to Microsoft's Office website for help, somehow I end up getting redirected to a sales page to purchase Office 2013. I wouldn't mind having that whole suite, don't get me wrong, but just like many of you, my whole money-situation is not sitting too pretty right now. Also, I don't need all those bells and whistles that accompany "Office". Now, I did need most of those B&W's back when I was working within the corporate environment, but now everything is different. I don't need all that. I just need to do my multiple email accounts and calendar, and have it all under one roof (so to speak). Granted...if I did want to add a bunch of 'stuff' to Thunderbird, I do have that option as well; however, for now, I'm totally pacified with how I got it all set up. ... Okay, so what's the BIG reason that really won me over on this particular application enough for me to come write this whole sh-pill? Hands down, no further questions required: My wife (who usually doesn't use, let alone even click) on anything I install on her computer because she'll tell me, "I don't need it because I don't want to spend the time learning how to use it. So, it won't do you any good to even try!" ... BOOM! You guessed it, she not only uses Thunderbird, she REALLY LIKES it! ... I'm sold!

"Doesn't download your personal folders (or attachments?"

    June 11, 2013  |   By RecklessRon1

    Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.6

    Pros

    Easy to download and install.

    Cons

Doesn't access personal folders - just the inbox.
Not sure if it handles attachments automatically.

    Summary

It only took an hour or so to know it wasn't what I needed. I'm a long time Mozilla fan and really wanted this to work but I wanted to download all my Yahoo emails with their attachments from all my folders and it doesn't seem to do that so I tried EM Client and it does everything (after a lot of hassling with settings).

"This All-In-One Application ROCKS! It earns 5 Stars!"

    May 12, 2013  |   By MrWebAuthor

    Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.5

    Pros

All of my MS-Office was 2003, and every time I went to Microsoft's website for any help with it, nearly every link led me to the page where I needed to buy the new 2013-version of Office. Needless to say, I'm too broke to dish out hundreds of dollars for an Office suite that would confuse me more than 2003. Since I'm very familiar with Outlook and have used it in my corporate job for years, I knew I'd miss having it on MY computers. But then a friend recommended Thunderbird, I downloaded it, read tons of HELPs documentation, and installed all the cool extensions I needed (Windows' theme, Lightning, and one more that lets me use and share my Google calendar with other people), worked on getting all the options and settings 'just right', and this software is WAY BETTER and much more user-friendly than Outlook! Sorry for this lengthy comment, but I'll let you know that there's a bunch more "Pros" I could share, but I'll stop here. I HIGHLY recommend this software to anyone!

    Cons

Considering I just installed it on all our computers last night (nope, I didn't sleep because I was totally and completely engrossed in learning about all the options that can be added to this tool), I've yet to experience any negative issues with it. It downloaded excellently from this website, installed like a charm, accepted all the addons with no problems at all, and the configurations were pretty easy to incorporate in comparison to Microsoft's Outlook. So far, as of yet, I've nothing to share regarding any "Cons" in this section. Only time will tell if this turns out to be crap-ware, but the cool thing is, Mozilla's got tons more of comprehensive HELPs pages and tutorials than Microsoft, so finding 'a fix' for any future issues shouldn't be too much of a hassle. I'm in my mid-50s and been doing technology for many years, and as I've gotten older, I've found "simpler" is a lot more satisfying than bells and whistles I'll never use and don't want to take the time to learn it all.

    Summary

I don't have much more to say that I haven't already shared in the upper two sections of this review. I know it's lengthy, but I hope this Review helps you out while you're just sitting there in your chair asking yourself, "Should I go for it (download it), or should I pass this one by and hope for greener pastures of something better on down the line?" I just know much I appreciate reading well-written Reviews from actual real people (such as myself and people just like you) who took the time and effort to share how they 'personally feel' about a product they've used themselves. The choice is up to you, now. Like I said, I hope this Review has helped you in making a quality decision. --- Oh, by the way, if you're a Mom, today is YOUR day: Happy Mother's Day!

    "Missing Folders/Will not download"

    May 8, 2013  |   By yfnetm

    Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.5

    Pros

    Usually easy to set-up

    Cons

    Random problems/ Crappy Support

    Summary

I use Thunderbird to access 3 mail accounts, 2 of them being GMail. One my GMail folders has totally disappeared. If I try to recreate it, Thunderbird automatically deletes it again.
When I try to download mail. Thunderbird does nothing OR is downloads for every account except the folder that it deleted.
I have attempted to get help from Mozilla support, but they appear to have no real help desk: everything is posted to a forum and if someone feels like helping to solve your problem, they will reply. If no one cares or no one has a clue, you're screwed, which is about 75 percent of the time.
