Editors' Review

Despite perceptions to the contrary, the desktop-based e-mail client is not dead. Mozilla Thunderbird 3.0 is a serious reaction to the prevalence of Web mail, so whether you're looking for a strong desktop client, an Outlook replacement, or a powerful tool for managing archives and Web mail offline, Thunderbird can scale to your needs.

Outlook users will notice the speed and responsiveness of the program, which loads quickly, even when weighed down by multiple folders and RSS feeds, and the basic feature set remains intact: good junk mail filters, HTML support, multiple identities, and robust Web mail, POP, IMAP, and Microsoft Exchange server support. Security features include S/MIME, digital signing, message encryption, and a built-in phishing detector. Add-ons, based on the same code as Firefox's add-on network, can enhance your security even further.

Joining such useful features as the back and forward e-mail browsing buttons and customizable tags in version 3.0 are a set of must-have features. The powerful search tool integrates results with desktop searches on Windows Vista and Windows 7, while tabs reinforce the connections between Web browsing and e-mail reading. In fact, the new search tool is so powerful that if you have a massive number of e-mails, you may want to set it to index them overnight lest it drain system resources from other programs. Gmail support especially has been revamped, so you now get an All Mail folder in Thunderbird, among other improvements. Mozilla's new Personas skins work in Thunderbird, while the Lightning add-on supplies the missing Microsoft Exchange-compatible calendar feature.

Flexible, powerful, and lightweight, Thunderbird 3 is an appropriate companion to Firefox in every way.

"Very good program."

April 14, 2011  |  By Rom Buescher

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.9

Pros

User friendly, clear, understandable.

Cons

3 problems: 1) No easy access to calendar; 2) Many actions cause loss of "Inbox', 3) Only way to get back to "Inbox" is a long, time-consuming scroll on the line.

Summary

Generally, a very good program but the 3 Cons mentioned above are aggravating.

"Lightweight. Great for businesses and consumers."

March 25, 2011  |  By mechaflash

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.9

Pros

-Easy Setup for individuals
-Easy Setup flow for business servers
-Lightweight on server resources
-Ability to manage multiple email addresses across multiple domains
-Simple migration features if you're wanting to move to a new computer

Cons

-Filtering has some issues with not completing all of its jobs and hanging (happens occasionally) Sometimes restarting the application fixes it.
-Move To and Copy To features are one too many clicks for my liking

Summary

Great for businesses and consumers. You get the most out of it if you are running your own servers with your own domains. Another "Pros" would be that you can setup an account onto multiple clients for users to be able to view the same email account, and manage it their own way (user A and B receives 5 messages from email account abc@abcINC.com, if user A chooses to delete them all, user B will still have all 5 messages available.) This can be accomplished by setting Thunderbird to save emails to the client computer.

"Good email collector"

March 22, 2011  |  By nwspinner

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.9

Pros

I can get email from all my accounts in one program!

Cons

Sometimes hangs up when deleting emails and gives me an error msg when it thinks there is a virus attached to an email or there is not enough room to download it. This only started with 3.1.9

Summary

I don't want to change programs, please release a newer version!

"One of many clones of Outlook Express-"

March 22, 2011  |  By andreaborman

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.9

Pros

None you cannot use it

Cons

Too complicated. Impossible to set up. So you cannot use it.

Summary

Thunderbird is based on Outlook Express, the original email client. And as Windows user will know. To set up Outlook Express, they ask you for you email address and password. Which of course you know. This can be a G.Mail or Hotmail address or other email address that you have. But then you are stopped right there. Because they then asked you for your outgoing http. or POP server - I don't know that. Then they ask you for your incoming http. or POP server-I don't know that. So outlook Express does not get set up and the email never gets sent. Now they have other email clients on the web such as Thunderbird and others. But they all have the same system-they ask for your POP server and most people do not know what that is. And even when you go onto the Google or Yahoo website and find out what the POP server is and type it in it still does not work. you just get an error message and the email client never gets set up. And Thunderbird is no exception it's the name as all of the other email clients-all clones of Outlook Express. As one of my friends said"You can't use it. It won't let you use it. It does not allow itself to be used." And if you are using it on another computer an office for example ,you won't know what the outgoing and incoming server is there. And most people including me who have a home computer do not know what their server is either. So you won't get the email clients up and running. They are impossible to use. I think that they should rename Outlook Express and clones, the email clients-THE EMAIL THAT NOBODY CAN USE. And the chances are if you try this, like me you will find that YOU won't be able to use it either. So forget this and stick with normal email such as web mail G.Mail or Hotmail. at least it works and you can use it.Andrea Borman.

"Absolutely love this program."

March 18, 2011  |  By ElMocoLoco

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.9

Pros

Does everything that I formerly did with Outlook. The tabbed design works great. The search features in my opinion are easier to use than in Outlook (i.e., I seem to get to the email I need quicker, and the results are laid out better. And its fast

Cons

The look of the application is clunky. Luckily you can change the theme to get a more professional look. The reply, forward, etc. buttons are on the email header rather than the top toolbar, but this is just personal preference, not a bad feature.

Summary

I would highly recommend this program to anyone who needs a email and calendar client with the capabilities of Outlook, but without the outlook price or complexity.

"Works well except it doesn't read or play attach well."

March 17, 2011  |  By gesmith7

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.9

Pros

It performs most things well

Cons

It times out on long messages and I can't find where I adjust the timer if it can at all. It doesn't play attachments well. They might play a wav file about half way through.
