Despite perceptions to the contrary, the desktop-based e-mail client is not dead. Mozilla Thunderbird 3.0 is a serious reaction to the prevalence of Web mail, so whether you're looking for a strong desktop client, an Outlook replacement, or a powerful tool for managing archives and Web mail offline, Thunderbird can scale to your needs.

Outlook users will notice the speed and responsiveness of the program, which loads quickly, even when weighed down by multiple folders and RSS feeds, and the basic feature set remains intact: good junk mail filters, HTML support, multiple identities, and robust Web mail, POP, IMAP, and Microsoft Exchange server support. Security features include S/MIME, digital signing, message encryption, and a built-in phishing detector. Add-ons, based on the same code as Firefox's add-on network, can enhance your security even further.

Joining such useful features as the back and forward e-mail browsing buttons and customizable tags in version 3.0 are a set of must-have features. The powerful search tool integrates results with desktop searches on Windows Vista and Windows 7, while tabs reinforce the connections between Web browsing and e-mail reading. In fact, the new search tool is so powerful that if you have a massive number of e-mails, you may want to set it to index them overnight lest it drain system resources from other programs. Gmail support especially has been revamped, so you now get an All Mail folder in Thunderbird, among other improvements. Mozilla's new Personas skins work in Thunderbird, while the Lightning add-on supplies the missing Microsoft Exchange-compatible calendar feature.

Flexible, powerful, and lightweight, Thunderbird 3 is an appropriate companion to Firefox in every way.

"A great improvement."

September 17, 2010  |  By WhitKeen

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.3

Pros

Loads more quickly than older versions, and doesn't just sit there looping as the old one did.\ when sending.

Cons

I had to get an IT Professional to erase my lifetime supply of emails which made the file enormous. Once that was done, it ran fine.

Summary

A definite improvement. Very happy with it.

"Liked the older version better."

September 16, 2010  |  By Whiterockmac

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.3

Pros

Better than Outlook or any Microsoft product.

Cons

No longer brings up address book when writing new mail or when replying and want to send to multiple addresses. Hard to dig up old stored and filed emails once compacted.

Summary

Have used product for years. Compatible with both Mac and windows. Price is right. Beats outlook hands down.

"Basic Programming Errors Caused Me To Stop Using"

September 13, 2010  |  By tombauman

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.3

Pros

There are no compelling reasons to replace Outlook Express with this program.

Cons

1. Does not automatically retrieve new emails.
2. Adding recipients to new email is cumbersome. Address list is not readily available.
3. Contacts are duplicated in the address book when they are part of a distribution list.

Summary

I have stopped using the program after 2 months. Items listed in cons were enough to make me return to Outlook Express.

"Exactly what I needed"

September 10, 2010  |  By jimf49

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.3

Pros

Neat, clean and fast

Cons

Absolutely none

Summary

There is practically no setup involved. You enter your name, email address and password. Thunderbird does the rest. I had it up and running with three accounts in about five minutes. The interface is well organized and totally free of any social networking garbage. Thank you Mozilla and goodbye Windows Live Messenger!

"Great replacement for Outlook."

September 08, 2010  |  By knitwhit43

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.3

Pros

I always used Outlook but I was using an old version. This is a great replacement for a home user. I like it very much.

Cons

When inserting an image into an email, I never use an alternate text. Wish I could choose my own defaut. Also, had a problem with HTML for my signature and homepage. Some was incompatible and some people were getting warnings with my emails.

Summary

I like the product very much once I was able to fix my problem mentioned above. Excellent!! I used Netscape and Composer for many years and loved that too. As I said, I wish I could pick my own default for the alternate text since I never use alternate text. Don't like have to remember to always change that. I usually for get and get the mesaage. Annoying!!
