No longer a fledgling upstart, Firefox is the gold standard of alternatives to the still-dominant Internet Explorer. Firefox 3.6 is full-featured, lightning fast, and secure. Its killer selection of add-ons remains strong, with built-in support for the next generation of themes, called Personas, plus the latest update makes version 3.6 about 20 percent faster than version 3.5. However, competition is strong and it can no longer be said that Firefox is the fastest browser available.

Several notable improvements in the latest revamp keep Firefox abreast of current browsing tech. In addition to the aforementioned improvements made to the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine so that it renders Web applications faster, there have also been other significant under-the-hood changes. These include: blocking third-party software from encroaching on Firefox's file system turf to increase stability; support for the Web Open Font Format, which means many non-English browser users should have a faster time loading Web pages with downloadable fonts; and support for the File interface, which can help with tasks such as uploading multiple photos and is part of the draft HTML5-standard effort. HTML5 support debuted in Firefox 3.5. Another deeper change to the browser is that it is now running scripts asynchronously, which can help to load a Web page faster by putting off some work until the high-priority chores are complete. Firefox 3.6 also isolates out-of-date plug-ins so they do not become a security risk.

Unlike Firefox 3.5, which was more about keeping the browser current rather than blazing new trails, Firefox 3.6 is once again on the warpath. Upgrading is highly recommended.

"Much faster than I.E."

June 27, 2010  |  By jdepape

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.6.4

Pros

I live in an area where my high speed internet service is almost as slow as my old dial up. Was going to discontinue service with my ISP but decided to try Firefox before cancelling. Very pleased, almost doubled the speed.

Cons

None that I can think of.

Summary

Too new to tell as I only downloaded Firefox 2 days ago but so far so good.

I love Firefox for it's fastness, but when I downloaded the new 3.6.4, I lost my top icons which include Help, Tools, etc. Can anyone tell me how to get those things back?

Cons

Lost my top list of things like Tools, Help, etc.

"Nice update, but a bit buggy."

June 26, 2010  |  By aries_toomany

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.6.4

Pros

Continues to be fast and reliable, add-ons, and customizable.

Cons

Plug-in lag, "freezes" occasionally with this version.

Summary

Being an open source browser, I rely on it for web surfing and downloading. Well, the last version (3.6.3) was more stable than this latest upgrade. I don't know why, but everytime I browse to certain social sites, it tends to hang for 1-2 seconds or even more when loading. While the last version of this... did not have this problem whatsoever. I tried reinstalling and even reformatted my computer/laptop to see if it changed, but sadly it didn't. This is the reason I switch between IE8 and Firefox. Please fix this issue. 3/5 star :)

"A solid web browser."

June 26, 2010  |  By commontech22

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.6.4

Pros

Firefox is home to lots of great add-ons and the ability to customize the way the interface looks and handles.

Cons

The speed can be bogged down by opening too many tabs, unlike Chrome which handles tabs much better.

Summary

Firefox is a good replacement to Internet Explorer if you are still using it. It also has been proven to be secure and reliable, with add-ons that help block ads and pop-ups to stay even more secure. But all these add-ons can slow down the browser a bit, not to an unbearable level but to a noticeable one. Right now, Google Chrome is the simpler faster option compared to Firefox, but if you want to check out all the add-ons then check this out.

"The best of a few good browsers."

June 25, 2010  |  By ycur

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.6.4

Pros

You can customize your browser with an enormous selection of browser addons.

Cons

I find that when Firefox is loaded with extensions, as is the case with my browser, the software opens slowly. This is only a minor inconvenience though and it doesn't seem to affect the speed that web pages load.

Summary

There are browsers that open faster, load pages quicker, are more stable, get better scores on the ACID 3 test, and ones that are more secure, but there are none you can customize to the extent you can Firefox. This reason alone makes it my preferred browser. Plain and simple, Firefox is a fun browser to use.

"An OK update!"

June 25, 2010  |  By mark bevan

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.6.4

Pros

Fantastic selection of good add-ons! One of the safest browsers out there!!

Cons

I think there is a lot of pressure on the Firefox developers to 'keep up with the Joneses!' How much faster can you make it without other aspects suffering??

Summary

Don't get me wrong i really love my Firefox, and i truly believe alongside the vast array of add-ons, it's the safest browser out there. Now, the last version 3.6.3, i found to be very buggy. And would just crash out of the blue, i would then get the little box, submit the crash report and carry on. Now this very latest update 3.6.4 is far more stable and as of yet,not had a single crash. But i do feel that my speed has suffered slightly. I wouldn't say by a great deal, but by 1 to 2 seconds slower. Noticed this straight after the update.
Also another issue which i feel isn't really being addressed from one update to the next, is the start up time. On some occasions, especially upon first turning on my computer, it will take up to a minute!! I retried installing prefetch1 in Firefox properties, which used to help, but doesn't seem to do much now. Also retried the Firefox Preloader, which helps but plays hell if you have to restart Firefox! Then up 2 minutes to restart. By the way, i would really appreciate anybodies advice on this matter, even started cutting back on the add-ons to no avail!
As i mentioned, the developers are under a lot of pressure to improve Firefox, and to gain a greater market share. And i feel since Firefox 3.5, there has always been some small niggling issues, fix one and another comes along! Lets do hope things will settle down soon, and we will get the old Fox back!!

"Improvements were made"

June 24, 2010  |  By lueeluee

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.6.4

Pros

3.64 is a much improved product from the previous version.

Cons

Previous version was slightly unstable on my W7 64 unit.causing occasional crashes. The browser was slow and busy in the background. ie 8 was much. faster and more stable. Mozilla should have done more testing.

Summary

For me ie8 had become my primary browser. This 3.64 version of FF seems to have fixed most of these issues.
