Editors' Review

Read CNET senior editor Rob Vamosi's extended review of Firefox 3.

No longer a fledgling upstart, Firefox 3 is full-featured, lightning fast, and an able Internet Explorer foe. Previous versions have seen Mozilla's approach to features such as tabbed browsing and extensions become extremely popular. Even though Firefox 3 lacks a killer feature, it offers significant improvements not to be missed.

Version 3 introduces a multitude of safety and usability features. The location bar drop-down menu now includes URLs from both your browsing history and your bookmarks. A new Add-Ons manager includes a built-in plug-in search engine, saving you the previous trip to the Mozilla Web site. Single-click the star icon on the right of the location bar to bookmark the current page, or double-click on it to simultaneously add and edit the bookmark entry. You can tag bookmarks, too. Other impressive new features include password confirmation before adding it to the saved passwords list, the ability to pause and resume downloads, and merged forward and backward history lists.

Firefox 3 now runs faster and, according to Mozilla, is less susceptible to hacks and other vulnerabilities. The browser now warns your system's antivirus program when you download a file, and anti-malware and anti-phishing utilities now throw up a warning page before allowing Firefox to load risky sites. The favicon reveals Web sites' ownership details and displays the security level of your connection to that site.

Developers will appreciate that Firefox 3's new graphics and text rendering code provide rendering improvements in CSS and SVG as well as improved display of fonts and complex scripts. Firefox 3--still open-source, as ever--is a browser that all users should consider making their default Web-surfing tool.

"Firefox is still king so far"

April 07, 2009  |  By mitchjmh

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.8

Pros

The ability to customize and add-ons that are very useful with surfing, bookmarking, menus, and a whole slew of other things.

Cons

Some releases tend to crash sometimes and some releases tend to hog memory more than others - the 3.06 and 3.08 releases seem to be fine but the 3.05 and 3.07 releases had crash and memory issues to them.

Summary

Despite reviews about Firefox crashing and despite reviews of Opera and Chrome and IE being better, Firefox is the one to beat and everyone knows it. If Chrome incorporated Firefox add-ons then they would give them a run for their money but other than that Firefox will remain my go to browser and it is the best browser to get if you want to get the most out of your web browsing experience - let me repeat that last line because it is the most important one you'll see about browsers - Firefox is the best browser you can get if you want to get the most out of a web browsing experience period. This is what makes it better than all the other browsers out there and despite any crash or memory issues, it's what will keep it on top until such time that another browser comes along that offers the same level of extras that enhance a persons surfing experience. Things like previewing a link before I open it - knowing what a link opens - using mouse clicks to navigate pages - being able to overwrite existing bookmarks with the current page etc. there are so many extra little things like this to aid a person while they surf and none of the other browsers have this - at least not anywhere near the level and ease that Firefox does. Opera tries but their stuff pretty much sucks. Until anyone else starts offering extras like this, Firefox will stay number one.

"It used to crash. Not any more"

April 20, 2009  |  By aventura_alex

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.8

Pros

The intuitive way it deals with the tabs, the new "awesome address box" (is that the name?), the ever coming great add-ons and the brand new "marking" capabilities are only some of the features that make this product indispensable.

Cons

None that I can tell. Maybe just the default Theme that should be something like my favourite (Noia 2.0 extreme).

Summary

Now with 3.0.8 my Firefox works perfectly most of the time. Crashes happen, but not too often. I wonder if people who's having the problem are using a particular add-on that is causing the trouble.

"The best browser..."

April 20, 2009  |  By lukavg

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.8

Pros

I tried many web browsers but my opinion is that firefox is the fastest and safest web browser.

Cons

It crashes a lot, especially on older and low processor speed computer.

Summary

I usually use firefox and can tell that it's much more better than internet explorer. only for opera i can tell that it's close to firefox. opera don't crash as that. if you don't like firefox you could like google's chrome, but it's not safe. it's good because never crashes and every tab means one process, not all tabs ne like in firefox which i think is minus. so, my conclusion is that firefox is best browser but it's not perfect :)

"It was good Before, but now ..."

April 19, 2009  |  By chcaudmont

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.8

Pros

Fast Browser, secure, friendly... Didn´t allow pop-ups.... *sigh*

Cons

POP UPS from I don´t know where or what. I´ve checked many times my settings, still...

Summary

Now I see those nasty pop-ups, I´m not that sure of firefox. Since I work mainly in the web, I guess its not that safe anymore.

"A browser that always crashes means less surfing....."

April 19, 2009  |  By bounders

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.8

Pros

Absolutely nothing.

Cons

Version 3.08 is the worst one to come out of Mozilla's open source programming. From crashing once an hour to crashing before it even loads are but two scenarios playing out on their Support Form.
You'd be wise to stay away from this version.

Summary

Use either Google's Chrome or Apple's Safari as a safe and fast alternative.

"An Excellent Browser"

April 18, 2009  |  By gregw9

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.8

Pros

Pretty fast to load pages. Cool add-ons really help. Seems to be more stable than IE so far. LIve chat support available.

Cons

At first I couldn't use it. The fonts were very blurry and hard to read. Then FireFox support clued me into using "Clear Type". Sequence; control panel, appearance and themes, display, appearance tab, effects, then select use "Clear Type".

Summary

I like it a lot. Cleaner and meaner than other browsers. What more can I say?
