"One of the best!"

January 19, 2007  |  By VersionTrackerUserOpinion

 |  Version: Moodle 1.7.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Moodle is an incredibly well done and well supported product. It's at the top, including both commercial and open-source offerings. Installation is straight-forward and you must be server-savvy. The administrative, instructor and student interfaces are very clean and relatively clear so no additional documentation or training is required.

Excellent set of additional customizations (activities, modules) provided at no cost by 3rd parties. Note that the basic moodle distribution is so complete that these are not necessary, merely extensions of value.

Upgrading from one version to another is easy, but any customizations must be dealt with as you'd expect with this kind of system and architecture.

"Stable and Innovative"

 |  Version: Moodle 1.6

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have used Moodle for four years now, and have tested version 1.6 in my classes enough to say that it is stable and ready for production sites. Bug-testing is thorough and fixing is fast. What I like best about this open source program is the user community. It supports innovation and contributions from teachers and developers all over the world. It has been adopted by the largest university in the world (Open Univ. UK--over 150,000 students) and yet is easy enough for a single teacher to set up with a couple clicks on a hosting service using Fantastico. I am now working with six other universities to make new modules--Project Module, Feedback Module, Mobile Phone Modules and other contributions. Imagine the next version, 1.7, which will begin repositories for teachers to share materials.

"Amazed that they give it away."

 |  Version: Moodle 1.3.4

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
My University dropped over $30K on the last version of WebCT -- a product with less features that Moodle. After just a week, I was up and running with my online course supplements (including time to get a grasp on PHP and MySQL). So far, I've only seen one problem - and inability to properly spell 'enroll.'

Oh, and Moodle works just fine with WebSTAR V/

"Portable, Open source Course Management Software"

May 15, 2004  |  By donhinkelman

 |  Version: Moodle 1.3b1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have used Moodle for two years now, managing 20 courses, most of them face-to-face university classes with Moodle as an online supplement and web portal. The results have been outstanding--increased interest in subjects, greater participation via discussion boards, journals and chats, and ease of administration for me and other teachers. The pace of updates and new features is incredibly fast, with a new calendar module, RSS feeds, groups, and customizable blocks the most recent ones. Unlimited theme customization, XML, unicode, and international interoperable standards coming in next major upgrade. With over 40 languages, you should have no problem quickly setting this up in any locale. The most invigorating aspect of Moodle is the energetic user/developer community, which engages in both pedagogical discussions and instant feedback for troubleshooting. The main developer team take a collaborative, constructivist approach to education with the learner at the centre. Highly recommended for both an individual teacher setting this up on your own server, as well as 30,000 student campus LMSs. Note: for quick installation, get a hosting provider with Fantastico--Moodle installation takes five minutes.

"A Terrific Start"

February 24, 2004  |  By Knob

 |  Version: Moodle 1.1.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
An open-source, utterly extensible CMS built with open source tools -- one that I was able to have running on my PowerBook in less than 30 min. -- with a growing developer and user community adding new features every few months? If I were dependent on Blackboard or WebCT to make my living I'd be very worried.

Moodle is a strong backbone and a great way for high school and college administrators to provide an inexpensive CMS that facilitates sound student-centered pedagogy.
