"Problems rest with the site you use pal"

October 17, 2013  |  By tekni

 |  Version: Mobogenie 2.1.7

Pros

Nothing amiss when I downloaded Mobogenie. I highlighted it and ran a spyware check on it and it was OK.

Cons

The download site I used had an extensive list of unwanted stuff I had to 'Un-tick' before I could get the Mobogenie software to clean download. I don't give reviews until I have thoroughly tried the product but it seems fine to me so far.

Summary

You must be very careful when downloading from sites other than the company you want, and Un-tick things you don't want. You MUST read the 'web address' and be careful if you want to avoid this sort of thing.. This especially applies to most free stuff out there.

"Use at Your Own Risk - It makes phone vulnerable"

October 04, 2013  |  By incomechanix

 |  Version: Mobogenie 2.1.7

Pros

1. Easy & Smooth Installation Hassle-Free
2. Nice Interface - Simple & User Friendly

Cons

1. Makes Your Phone Vulnerable to Adware/Malware
2. Advises you during installation to override
factory default setting and adjust a setting
which is intended for remote tech support by
a very highly skilled specialist technician.

Summary

This program advised me during my setup that to proceed I had to manually make an adjustment to a setting in the phone usually only accessed when a tech support person needs remote access to install a program; otherwise that setting shuts out programs such as malware and adware from being able to much more quickly & easily self-install on your phone.

That setting is called the USB Debugging setting which is located in the following directory path: Settings>Applications>Development>USB Debugging
It's purpose is stated right below where you check to activate it: it reads: "Enable debug mode when USB is connected"

What happens is when you tap the checkbox to activate it an alertbox appears, urgently prompting you "Enabling USB Debugging allows programs to install on your phone without notification. Are you SURE you want to enable USB Debugging?"

That tells you RIGHT THERE what you are doing is handing over the keys to your phone to allow a program to march right in and SELF-Install .....WITHOUT EVEN TELLING YOU ABOUT IT...

That's a security threat, as well as makes your phone vulnerable to adware malware bloatware etc..

A different review posted here, very recently, addressed this same issue and it was replied to by the MoboGenie team denying that adware or malware is installed by the software.. In this review I am not saying for a fact that it did or does install that during initial installation. But as you have read for yourself, the ANDROID operating system itself attempts to caution you to the potential liability of enabling that setting under other than the recommended time (under the direct supervision of a technical supportperson needing direct access for troubleshooting purposes via that setting) That's what it's for. Otherwise it really shouldn't be adjusted.
This software, MoboGenie to me appears to exploit and capitalize on this setting without any justification to the user. I don't see why

I think they want you and I to believe that USB Debugging needs to be turned on simply to install the software ONLY. Well, they should say so if that is the case. But they don't. They don't tell you to turn it on, install the software, then deactivate it (turn it back off). They just tell you to "enable" it. (Turn it on, and LEAVE IT ON)..

This is why I have presented both the Pro's AND the Cons.. and my Summary is the TITLE of this Review... USE AT YOUR OWN RISK... I would suggest to you that if you decide to explore this software, to completely back up your phone, all data, contact directories, etc, and everything you can back up (apps, games, etc) because then if you are suspicious about whether you want to keep this software, you can wipe your phone all the way back to the factory default settings and then reinstall your backups of your data, if you trust that data is "clean" obviously..

INSTALL AT YOUR OWN RISK... you may be placing your phone in jeopardy...

sincerely..

"BEWARE- Malwear and Adwear in this product"

August 07, 2013  |  By gary161514

 |  Version: Mobogenie 2.1.7

Pros

A program that installs Malwear and Adwear doesnt have any Pros

Cons

BEWARE -This program installs Malwear and Adwear Extensions in your Internet Browser that are difficult and time consuming to remove
It installs,
1) WebCake 3.0 - an adware program that displays coupons, advertisements and sponsored links via a pop-up box on certain websites that you are visiting

2) Selection Links 4.3 that causes a large pop up of advertisement links to appear on the left of your screen when you do an Internet search.
Very annoying

3) Changes the appearance of new Browser tabs to show links to shopping sites.

Anyway - My Phone Explorer is a much better program with many more useful features than this infected rubbish.

Summary

BEWARE- Malwear and Adwear in this product and much better alternatives available anyway
