Virtually anyone who's used the built-in Windows search utility can tell you that it has a lot of room for improvement; it's slow and not particularly powerful, and finding needed files with it can be an exercise in frustration. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternative search options, such as Mo-Search. When we tried it, this easy-to-use program left the built-in Windows search in the dust, quickly returning relevant results while the Windows search continued plodding along at a snail's pace.
The reason that Mo-Search is so quick is that it creates its own index of your files, and this does admittedly take a while; the indexing process started as soon as we launched the program and took about half an hour. But once it was done, searching was lightning-fast. The built-in Help file provides information about search operators and filters for users who need more powerful search options but aren't already familiar with how to employ them. The results were displayed in a list that was sortable by name, relevance, location, size, and date modified, and in a pane below, Mo-Search displayed a preview of each selected file.
We do wish that the program provided tooltips for the unlabeled buttons on its interface; a bit of experimentation revealed that they represent such features as opening and e-mailing files and displaying file properties. One other drawback to Mo-Search is the necessity of reindexing every time new files are created, but this is a much quicker process than the initial indexing. Overall, we were impressed with Mo-Search's speed and thoroughness, and we recommend it.

Great user Interface, very fast, finds just what I am looking for, easy to use. In summary: much better than all the other desktop search tools I have tried. Really well done! The Find Duplicate files tool is also very easy to use! I really can't say enough about this product!

Pros
Program works great for finding legal files by single or multiple words. Sorts files by number of times word appears in document. Excellent for anyone with a large number of word processing files filed by client rather than subject. I use this tool several times a week to find documents that I created long ago and can't find. For example, I can find a document called "mandate" in an instant. This program is fast.
Cons
The initial indexing takes some time and the one drawback I can think of is that you have to re-index your files in order to include recently created documents. The re-indexing takes less time than the initial indexing.

Pros
Automatically indexed my files, very simple to use, fast searching and free (no annoying Register-Me messages)! Ranking results is nice too - it really helps me find what I am looking for. Overall: very useful, highly recommended. There is an updated version on the meauxsoft.com site.
Cons
Requires Microsoft Word to index Word documents - but given its free I can do without that.

Cons
After intallation and indexing of files I tested it against PowerPoint (.ppt) and Word (.doc) files using the seach body of text option. It worked fine on the .ppt files but was unable to find .doc files consistently.

Pros
This program is fast, has a great user interface that you feel comfortable with. The search for files runs smooth and gives a pleasant little ding sound when done.
Cons
However, the search for duplicate files which is supposed to use md4 checksum, seems to run strictly by file name and not file size. Much like another duplicate file finder that did the same. It is supposed to compare size, bits, name, etc... but didn't. All my dupes simply had a name in common and were completely different. Also the dupe file finder bogged my system badly,or the program bogged, one or the other. The search results were not too pleasing either. I use agent ransack,a free file finder, and it out performed Mo-search completely. Agent ransack also has a file sorter so that the files aren't all mixed up as does mo-search. Mo-search has potential to be a great program and i fully appreciate the people who believe in free software who created this, but it has alot of issues to work out. I will keep watching this one, if many of the bugs are worked out, this may one day be a number 1 file search program.
