Editors' review

Mint is the iOS mobile companion to Mint.com, the popular financial services site that helps you track all of your accounts and budgets.

You have to set up an account with Mint.com to use the app (which involves giving Mint.com access to your bank, credit card, and investment accounts), then you can monitor your accounts, budget, and cash flow from the site or the app. The passcode-protected app presents your finances in summary form, with the capability to drill down to the item level of a purchase. Follow the trail to the end to edit an item's transaction details or jot down notes or tags. You can't do everything from the app (for example, you need to go to the site to transfer money between accounts), but the latest version adds many new mobile features, including the ability to enter cash and pending transactions. The biggest change for Mint 2.0 is impressive iPad support, with interactive charts and graphs.

The Mint app has gotten much better since its initial release, with 2.0 representing a major step forward--but this app is still a supplement and not a replacement to the full-fledged Mint.com site.

"Mint not ready for prime time..."

    July 05, 2014   |   By curtislharris

    Version: Mint Personal Finance 3.2.0

    Pros

    Easy to use...

    Cons

    Numerous errors with many duplicates...

    Summary

Have spent a few months with Mint now and feel I can give it an honest overview? In general the idea is great and it started out so? After awhile, my accounts were now showing with the correct data? Thought this would be an easy fix and I reached out to customer support to resolve? And that's when th drama started? Customer service seemed to know less about the app than I did and I don't know much! My investment page was showing something completely different than the investment overview page with numerous errors? A large amount of duplicate entries were showing which may, or may not, have had something to do with the problem? In short, customer service seemed to not have a clue as to what was going on, didn't seem to be intellectually curious enough to help me troubleshoot the issue, and quite frankly didn't seemed to be interested at all? Sense the idea of managing my accounts from a holistic perspective is great, I plan to try one of the other financial account programs like Personal Capital or the like...

    "Not as promised"

    January 12, 2012   |   By tnmedic1

    Version: Mint.com Personal Finance 2.0

    Pros

Will import from outside sources, Can itemize transactions into specific categories

    Cons

Won't synch with a lot of banks, does not synch well with USAA or other institutions. I get multiple duplicate transactions which must be cancelled individually. This has been a noted problem with Mint.com for at least a year with apparently no effort on Mint's behalf to fix this. Also, you cannot separate transactions into trends for more than one month. NOT helpful for year-end or tax purposes. You can sort the transactions when they happen, but if they are only occasional, then you have to manually search all transactions. Also if you close an account, you cannot delete any payment reminder alerts without deleting the entire account. NOT helpful at year-end time, either.

    Summary

Good for newbies, folks who have one or two accounts, folks that don't do business with USAA, folks that can keep up with aggregate transactions some other way, folks that keep accounts open for years without closing them. IMO, this site is HIGHLY advertised but just doesn't measure up to all its hype.
