MiniTool Data Recovery for Mac helps you recover files from your hard drive or an external drive. With just a few clicks, you can run a scan and find the files you're looking for.
Four options: This program can work to recover files in four different ways. These include Undelete Recovery, Damaged Partition Recovery, Lost Partition Recovery, and Digital Media Recovery, which is the option best suited for an external drive. All scans run quickly and display results, so you don't have to wait around to get your files back.
Lots of help: Tips show up periodically as you're working in the program to help you find the right tool. There is also a Technical Support page that includes links to a Manual, FAQs Page, and an email address for 24/7 technical support.
Intimidating interface: Once you get past the initial screen by making a selection about the type of recovery you want to attempt, the app's interface can get a little overwhelming, especially for beginners. However, if you're willing to invest a little time in reading the manual and the other Help resources, you can figure out what the next steps are regardless of your level of computer knowledge.

500G WD external hdd would not mount and could not be repaired by DiskUtility. Downloaded freeware above, began scan at 7pm, set macmini to "never sleep" and let it run overnight. Awoke to the hdd properly mounted and all files recovered.
There was no report from the software showing what had been repaired or recovered etc. Time machine appears to not be working anymore, but I don't care, I will not be relying on this hdd for anything more than third tier redundancy from now on.
My hdd was not dropped or damaged, it is just old and must have experienced some failure in the boot sequence that prevented it from mounting. I am not sure what the software did or repaired, it just worked. A report would have been nice to understand what happened, but I'm not complaining.
I love this software. I used it once and retrieved pictures that i thought i would never get to see agian.
FYI there is a portable version of Data Recovery, which can be found here:
safe my life
I accidentally deleted my fathers partition which contained all photos. i got it back using this tool.
Found all the important files I was looking for in my damaged hard drive. It shows preserved directory structure when it can find it.
It took a full day to scan the disk prior to being able to restore files--that's pretty standard apparently. But once scanned, the lookup of filenames and restoring individual files was really zippy.
Not terribly intuitive to use; but hopefully you're not doing this every day. Doesn't have prebuilt filename filters for a lot of file types common to Mac (for example, you can't filter on '.key' to look for Keynote files).
You *think* you're going to be able to recreate your hard drive from the files themselves, but it's so much harder when the directory structure isn't intact. So many directories on the Mac have parallel structures, or have structures that you never see except when you're trying to recover something like your email or your photo library.
Perfectly manageable disk recovery at a good price.

Description from publisher says "What's new in this version: With Free Edition, user can restore lost data up to 1 GB" However after launching you it say you can restore up to 1MB of data. Felt suckered into downloading.
