CNET Editors' review
Minecraft is to my 25-year-old self as Legos were to my 5-year-old self: a time-sucking, mind-bending, and sleep-depriving experience in the simplest of activities. It hits the right tune on the subject of creation: it really does provide building blocks for your imagination.
Minecraft has no real direction, anchoring plot, or specific guidelines. Players are dropped into a world with only the ability to carve out resources from the surrounding land; you're a miner (duh!).
The game's graphics won't impress, but leaves you with one direction and focus: to build. Soon you'll find out that as it gets dark, chilling around with a pickax probably won't do you any good against the pixelated zombies, monsters, and other creepy critters after you.
Minecraft's central focus is in crafting tools and collecting resources to pretty much build whatever you want. Whether it's building more-powerful weapons to fend off creatures of the night or building that mega fortress to gloat at other miners in the open world, you're still going to need the right raw materials. Make no mistake: this game is a grinder. But after toiling for hours and hours and finally stumbling upon that precise material you need is a priceless moment in its own right.
As a self-sustaining teacher, Minecraft fails. Don't rely on Majong's limited provisions to learn the ropes of the game. Instead, I recommend scouting the Net for community made guides: there's a plethora of custom guides out there that will help you get the most out of this game. And really, that limit is all up to you.
If you simply want to focus on building and avoid the hassle of defending your fortress, then Creative mode is for you. In this mode, you have unrestricted access to all the building blocks and tools needed to build the structure or statue of your dreams, plus the ability to fly for kicks.
If you're uncomfortable with lack of direction, then this game isn't for you. But when it comes to open-world gameplay and mechanics, Minecraft is a primitive but fine demonstration of thriving on bare-bones gaming. Grab an ax and start digging.

From Markus Persson:
Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. At night monsters come out, make sure to build a shelter before that happens. It also has music by C418

"Not free, a scam"
Version: Minecraft 1.4.7
Pros
There are none.
Cons
Unfortunately, you don't get the memo until you set up an account with email address and personal information that it is not free. As soon as you register and confirm your email, you're taken to a page that says, "okay you're set up, now buy Minecraft or view the demo".
This is why everyone should have a spare email account for the purpose of testing junk like this.Summary
I'm not opposed to buying those items that I find myself using, I've done so many times, but when something is advertised as being free, I expect a little more than a demo. I'll buy it if I like it, but for junk like this, I won't even look. Just my opinion.

"Addictive and Expandable Gameplay"
Version: Minecraft 1.4.7
Pros
Addictive play if you enjoy a sandbox game. There are a LOT of mods that add a great deal of extended enjoyment to the game.
Cons
If you enjoy playing with other people, the best servers to join have a number of hoops to jump through to join.
While there are many mods, they don't always work together, and the best stuff out there isn't always obvious, it has to be found.Summary
Here are some suggestions for improving your enjoyment of the game.
For tutorials, try paulsoaresjr on YouTube, or just search for MINECRAFT TUTORIAL.
For mods, ONLY use those available on the official Minecraft forums. Download and set up MultiMC. It makes the mod process a LOT simpler, lets you select minecraft versions, and will let you download the latest version of Forge.
When you go to install mods, it's important to understand how MultiMC works, so read the directions. When you go to add a mod, make sure the mod is the same version as your minecraft (this is included in the title of the mod). Make sure to read the installation instructions for the mod, AND look if there are compatibility issues.
If you stick with mods that require Forge, they are generally compatible with each other.
If you're worried about registration info that you give to Mojang, I believe the web version of the game requires the least to play, but I trust Mojang with my info a LOT farther than other companies that require registration. -
"Get what you pay for! $26 and you're in!"
Version: Minecraft 1.4.7
Pros
My 11-year-old son is addicted to this game. He's able to concentrate for hours without medication and has created incredible building designs. This game also nurtures his independence. He has experienced a great learning curve and had a blast doing it. Now he's meeting others -- you can play singleplayer or multi-player -- and is continuing to grow and be proud of what he's accomplishing. I've played with him a few times and it can be a lot of fun.
Cons
The biggest issue I have with Minecraft is the absence of a good manual. Someone has cobbled together a MINECRAFT FOR DUMMIES that you can download for about $7, but it's very basic. This demands a more comprehensive manual -- not about game play, which is easy to pick up or read up on. Rather, after you play a while, you'll want to try one or two modifications ("mods") that can smooth action or graphics, change textures, add themes, etc. These can be fun, but there is a considerable learning curve in figuring out what folders to open and what files to place where. Most folks who offer instructions inadvertantly leave something out. Once in a while, you'll find a good YouTube video or blog entry on how to install a mod. But then, as we were finally getting it, we found out that certain mods are incompatible with multi-player servers (which are tricky to set up), or maybe every player who's going to join a server has to have a certain mod or maybe lose one, etc.
Summary
This stuff is arcane, and I have yet to find a comprehensive source that enables one to install these things right the first or second time.
Although the modification process can be a huge pain in he butt, it's doable and often worthwhile, but don't count on rushing through mod installations. Even after four or five, you'll inevitably come up against some incompatibility. There's a reason most installation instructions warn you start with a clean Minecraft, which is simple to download anytime you launch. I'd recommend you back-up Minecraft versions that work well, and always start with a fresh Minecraft when you install a new mod. If it works for a while, you can add the mod permanently to your main working minecraft
The technical frustrations apply to more advanced aspects. The basic game is simple to download, install, and play. This is a very fun game for imaginative kids from all over the world. But also be forewarned: as there are in life, so are there jerks on Minecraft. They're called "griefers" and they will destroy what you've spent hours building just because they can. If you notify the admins, can (and do) ban the culprits. Also, there are strategies and tactics you can read about on hiding resources, and even mods that can prevent such destruction.
Bottom line, though, this has to be some of the best money I've ever spent on my son's gaming. -
"SCAM: Just a PLOY TO GET YOUR PERSONAL INFO, Not free"
Version: Minecraft 1.4.7
Pros
none, since it is not free and possibly a scam.
Cons
I gave out all my commonly used password, maiden name, etc for hit, in order to register, then after all that work. It will not let you play unless you pay. Sounds like a good way to get people to give out their personal info to a stranger. Just wasted 45 minutes to register and investigate how to play and if it is a scam.
Summary
scam

"It's not free"
Version: Minecraft 1.4.7
Pros
Never played it, if its really free why do I need an account???
Cons
When somebody offers something for free, that means it is supposed to be free. Nuff said
Summary
Just another way of getting more crap on your computer, if its free then let me download the game and install it without asking me to install anything else. Also if its free, why do I need an account? Read the other reviews, they all had to pay to play.

#The sky is not the limit, now you can build higher than the clouds!
#Trading, fighting, mining and living with others across the globe can be done.
#Minecraft worlds can become alternative natural art, the map generation will make you feel like you are in the last undiscovered place on earth!
There are so many things to list!Cons
#Crashes are not a common at all but an unexpected event.
#If you have a slow computer you will have to put up with low viewing distances and non-dynamic lighting
And, WARNING, you will become annoyed by something, your house blowing up, burning; you drowning, starving etc.Summary
I am totally addicted to Minecraft - it has become my home from home in my home! The only game where you can express your creativity and live like you maybe can't. Believe me, once you are into it you will look at the world and go "ppfft! I could do better on Minecraft"
It is a never ending solution to perpetual boredom.
~Have fun~
PS. to all whom are complaining about it not being free - not everything in life it free!
Was your computer free? You house, your TV that gives you less entertainment that this game does (Well, that's what I think)
