"Hey, here is some malware. I'm letting it through XD"

    May 14, 2015  |   By blaice

    Version: Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1.1593

    Pros

Tells you: you are being infected.

    Cons

Does... nothing about it. May help the trojan?

    Summary

Um, instead of telling me a trojan is trying to access my computer, why not do something about it?

Windows fail. Trash program. 1½ stars may be too much credit. Would review again.

    "Great "FREE" Application"

    March 4, 2015  |   By Taddea

    Version: Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1.1593

    Pros

Free would be one of them. I have found the application to work quite well. I have used previous version up to the newest version and have never had a virus on my computer. I am on the internet for hours every day. Common sense and Windows Defender together work great.

    Cons

It isn't as full featured, but that suits me just fine.

    Summary

I've been working in the computer industry for 31 years and have used lots of programs for virus protection. I wouldn't touch most the Virus protection apps because they bloat the system down. Windows Defender doesn't. I'll stick with it, thank you.

"Running on Win8.1 with no problems"

    December 27, 2014  |   By whatisname

    Version: Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1.1593

    Pros

Apart from scans I have nothing to do with it, and of course it is fully integrated and free.

    Cons

None I am aware of other than worrying about the pre 8.1 fright reports, I note nobody has since done tests on 8.1

    Summary

I get warnings of worms and dodgy sites, downloads being checked, warned of dodgy emails, no slowing down from new etc., so something must be working.

    "Antivirus you've already payed for"

    July 23, 2014  |   By Kingma

    Version: Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1.1593

    Pros

    You already have it
Daily updates without adding yet another process
Integrates neatly with windows and all your browsers
Checks all your downloads and attachments
    Non intrusive, low on resairces

    Cons

    None
Really, can't of anything (added to get 10 chars?

    Summary

Defender that comes with Windows 8 is a state of the art anti virus and ani spyware program that neatly integrates with all your browsers, checks in coming files, runa quietly in the background and will not annoy you unless it really neads to grab your attention. It does not add another unwanted network burden as it does integrate with the windows updates that you already have activated. You have, don't you?
It saved me from infected downloads, websites and email attachements.
Keep your money in your pocket, all other antivir software basically is draining your computer reapurces as well as your bank account, needlessly.

    "8.1 Upgrade Broke Windows Defender"

    December 24, 2013  |   By chuck50954

    Version: Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1.1593

    Pros

I've been looking all over the internet for a solution to my problem. The 8.1 installation broke Defender - it seems to have deleted it completely from the computer, as the directory that is mentioned in some help forums is missing from my Win8.1 installation. There are various error messages when I try to activate Defender. Various forums are full of similar complaints, but no solutions are on offer.

    Cons

You can't install Defender from this file if you have Win 8 or 8.1. There is an error message saying it's already installed.

    Summary

Microsoft did a bad, and hasn't fixed it yet. People have been complaining about this ever since 8.1 went live. Please get on it, Micro$oft.

    "An okay software"

    October 2, 2013  |   By MastermindProgrammer

    Version: Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1.1593

    Pros

-It can get rid of normal spyware like it's meant to
-Included in later versions of Windows
-Quick scans are nice and quick
-Full scans are not too slow(3 hours is NORMAL, depending on your PC)

    Cons

-Detecion rate are not so good
-Doesn't get rid of some other malware ad viruses

    Summary

In many of the reviews users have complained about how bad it is. It's not thay bad! It is NOT a full antivirus program, and if you did use it as a full antivirus, you used it incorrectly!Windows defender is an ANTI-SPYWARE. It will not stop many things that is not spyware related.

"Excellent Program - class of it's own"

    September 6, 2013  |   By ChoiceVoice

    Version: Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1.1593

    Pros

    -real time protection.
-integrates fully with windows and has never caused a bsod or conflict ... EVER. this is very note worthy.
    -free.
-is not alarmist. note that you don't get a billion detections because of this. this is microsoft, they can't flag legitamate compeditors products as an infection without an antitrust lawsuit. yet other anti malware companies will flag each other to eliminate competition. furthermore, it is made to remove real threats, not cookies or other legitimate browser tool bars or add ons. other companies will flag these (though they shouldn't) just to pretend they're finding something sinister.
-scans downloads with ie (and other browsers)
-when infection detected, it blocks it in windows firewall to stop trojan stealing private info.
-guards a dozen registry values, start page, etc.
-originally GIANT AntiSpyware, an excellent product they purchased.
-ability to easily remove installed ActiveX software.
    -integrated into microsoft spynet.

    Cons

-there is a lot of negative comments about this program by ill informed individuals. this is not an antivirus program. it is an anti spyware program. and it doesn't get a lot of detections because it's user friendly and not alarmist.

-note that their detections are the same as mse (microsoft security essentials), but with virus etc removed. cuz it's anti spyware.

    Summary

for an antispyware dedicated program, you don't have many options. only defender has real time protection. and its completely free. malwarebytes, superantispyware, or spybot don't have real time protection for free. if you wish to use defender as demand scanner you can by turning off real time protection (note that malwarebytes is actually an antimalware so it's not really comparable, you should compare it with mse instead).
