"Way to go Microsoft!"
Version: Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1611.0
Pros
1. It doesn't eat up resources like most other anti-virus programs.
2. Free!Cons
1. The first scan is a little slow, but it gets faster.
I will update with more as I come across them.Summary
All in all this is a great anti-virus program, even better that it is free! I installed this as I have had a lot of people recommending it to me in the past month. I have Webroot Anti-Virus with Spy Sweeper installed on here alongside Microsoft Security Essentials and I first did a Scan with Webroot, found 3 Viruses, 1 Trojan, and Key-logger (I deliberately put more than that on here.), and told it to keep them and remove from quarantine. When I scanned with Microsoft Security Essentials I didn't expect for it to do as well, it found all 5 Viruses, all 2 Trojans, and the Key-logger. For me, it does better than most other Anti-Virus programs.
Two more pros I forgot to mention.
I hope this program works as well for you as it did for me.

4. Easy to use. -
"does not boggle the mind; effective; thanks MS."
Version: Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1611.0
Pros
lightweight, very protective FREE, does not bog computer down.
Cons
Perhaps just a couple of more features, only a couple. Rootkit checker/finder/ quarantine/remover?
Summary
If you use windows, get it, use it, save your $$$$ on other bloated anti this or that for buying big flat panel HDTV's!!

"Very Good, High Detection Rates, Easy to Use!!!!!"
Version: Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1611.0
Pros
Fast Scan times, easy interface, easy to use for anybody, good detection rates and FREE. Doesn't seem to slow down computer much at all. The perfect AV for the person that just wants to turn it on and then leave it alone.
Cons
Not enough information, tools for advanced users. Perfect for beginners or turn it on and leave it alone people.
Summary
This is a Great AV product for anybody. I have it installed on my sons computer and it's easy for him to use and is pretty fast. I personally use Avast Pro 5 but found it may be just a little confusing for a 10 year old so opted to try MSE for his laptop and was truly surprised at how well it does. Seems to score well in most comparative tests that I have seen.

"Amazing, efficient, and catches everything!"
Version: Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1611.0
Pros
Detects everything that I could possible get on my computer. It also doesn't slow down my computer unlike someone *cough* McAfee. Also it has very simple settings.
Cons
I can't think of one.
Summary
I love this software. It's lightweight but it's still like having a huge army. In other words it's like having all of the worlds defenses in the weight and package of a remote control car. It's hard to explain but it detects everything but it doesn't drag your computer into slow drowsy processes. People keep complaining that their Full Scan takes for ever but for me it only takes an hour or less. It even detects dangerous scripts such as .bat files and stops you from opening them. This is by far the best Security Defense for every PC out there. Also if you want you can download the 2.0 beta. (not on this site)

"They sell your information to outside companies."
Version: Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1611.0
Pros
NONE READ THE PRIVACY INFORMATION. THEY SELL YOUR INFORMATION FOR STATICAL ANALYSIS
Cons
Read the privacy act they give your information to outside companies for statical analysis most likely meaning they sell your information.
Summary
REMOVE IMMEDIATELY FROM YOUR COMPUTER.

"My PC is Secure! So far! No issue at all!"
Version: Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1611.0
Pros
From Microsoft, Free, Don't need to be a rocket scientist to use it.
Wish it has a tune up feature as well. But thats just being greedy.Cons
None that really stand out.
Summary
I'm still a news user of this software. It looks and feels very secure. There's nothing fancy about M.S.E. free, very simple to use, light on the PC and the cherry on the cake is, its from Microsoft.

"Worst then any virus."
Version: Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1611.0
Pros
I found none.
Cons
System resource hog has had my AMD Athlon 2200+ 2 GHz with 1 gig RAM pegged 100 percent most of the time since installing it. Almost hangs the computer while try to open large files.
Summary
My other machine with the same processor and different anti-virus soluton works perfectly without out momentary "hangs". This one is right there with Norton Internet Security is far as being a system resource hog.
-
"Solid detection, constant updates, good for old PCs."
Version: Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1611.0
Pros
fast, light, no extra features most people don't need. Works quite well on my oldest desktop.
Cons
Won't run on my main desktop due to some tweaks I made to Windows.
Summary
If you're looking for a light weight, but solid, free AV then this is your best bet. Unless you hate MS, in which case shouldn't you be running Ubuntu or something?
-
"Solid performing anti-malware"
Version: Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1611.0
Pros
Professional test said it is the best free av. Updates easily and doesn't slow my system. It keeps out both viruses and spyware.
Cons
Takes a while to do a full scan.
Summary
I read in a British online tech magazine, that of the av's they tested, mse was at the top of the free group. MSE runs smoothly, without bogging my system, and is fast to respond to commands. It takes a little over a half an hour to full scan my computer for viruses and spyware. Updates are seamless. Overall, I'm very pleased with this program. I tried avast in its' place for a while, but avast let a brutal malware in, and then couldn't even find it. It took mbam to find the bugger. So I'm back to mse.
I have xp with 512 like you, and mse runs fast and smooth on my old beast. I think you may have another problem with your pc.
