"Outlook 2007, 2010 and the plug-in "Outlook Connector""

    March 22, 2011  |   By stimpy_aw

    Pros

It's a great way to use a Hotmail / Windows Live email account inside of Outlook.... but

    Cons

If you use the above setup, an .ost file is created that is synced between your local computer and Hotmail / Windows Live mail. This .ost file IS NOT THE SAME AS the .pst file Outlook creates for other email accounts.

    Summary

Let me just say I have been using Microsoft's software for the past 22 years and have upgraded (purchased) the new versions of MS Office. On the whole MS Office is what every small to large scale company needs, even a single user too.

    BUT

When you provide a service that has an gaping hole in the software please to a sec and FIX IT! What I'm talking about, MS Outlook 2007 and 2010 has a plug-in called "Outlook Connector" it allows you to use your Hotmail / Windows Live email account with in Outlook. The problem is the it creates a local file with a .ost and not .pst. I understand why they can't use a .pst for Hotmail / Windows Live mail. What I don't understand why they have built in to Outlook a way to load a .ost file like you can a .pst file. You have to use a 3rd party program and spend anywhere from $90 to $500 for one time use to convert the .ost file to a .pst file.

(Know talking to MS) If you build a software program that creates a file it should be able to open that file!

Thank you Microsoft for showing yet again that you have missed the smallest detail in your Office Outlook 2010 software an cause your uses a NIGHTMARE. You have been building software long enough not to miss something so small and yet so important.

Please someone, build a better Office Suite!
